Gas mileage in HV mode

    So...what gas mileage do other folks get on here in HV mode? I just can't believe the great mileage I'm getting...just drove approx. 50 miles on I-5 and I-90 and ended up with 71.9 mpg. this is insane...especially since I wasn't doing anything special, just normal driving around the speed limit (60 - 65). Is this similar to the Gen4 models or is the Prime particularly thrifty?

    I'm getting 65-70 in HV mode... been spectacular! I did a combo EV/HV drive this morning to the office and using the HV in the right spots got me an amazing result... check this out... IMG_0670.JPG

    yeah...I've done that as well the other day and got something similar. Have you figured out when EV Auto comes into play? Whenever I tried it the car just stays in EV ...not sure what I have to do so the engine comes on in EV auto.

    What's strange is my 2012 Plugin gets 10 mpg more on the same drive as my 2011 Prius

    I'm quite curious how Prime will do here without plugging in. Hopefully, I won't have to wait too much longer to find out. This evening, it was a run out to go Christmas tree shopping... shortly after getting home and not having any electricity available. 42 miles of driving, mostly highway, with the temperature only 36°F out resulted in a pleasing 49 MPG average.

    Back when it was warmer (2 months ago), my 172-mile drive home from up north came to 58 MPG. That was especially impressive for no plug results.

    So, there's definitely much to look forward to. Here where the heater is absolutely essential, efficiency from the engine even when you have plugged it will be nice. It will be very exciting to witness my Prius PHV performance records being easily shattered by Prime. We take a number of very long drives over the holidays to visit family.

    Yes without a wall charge. It seems like the car charges the battery faster while driving in the plugin. I can't figure an other reason.

    No hills but I would think you are right about the car being able to store more energy.

    These are great MPG numbers .....

    I think Prime in HV can create ideal load condition for the ICE virtually all of the time. And, the ICE (like all gas piston engines) runs most efficiently de-throttled/under load. That's where these terrific numbers come from, to a large extent.

    I'm not certain how many people will understand this statement, so I'll explain it as I understand it and Tideland can correct me if needed.

    A "throttle" is a device or method to variably restrict the airflow into the engine. It does this by "pinching" the air intake. Think of it as a butterfly valve in an air intake port. The "pinch" or "restriction" causes losses which reduces air flow which reduces power. But those losses in restricting the flow are, well, losses! That means lower efficiency.

    "De-throttled" means removing that restriction - namely, "full throttle". But you want to control power because you don't need full power (not to be confused with full throttle) to go 55mph. To control power at full throttle, you can control RPM by controlling the ratio between the engine and the wheels. A very "high gear" will allow the engine to run very slowly at that vehicle speed thus producing very little power even at full throttle, but doing so very efficiently.

    2016 standard prius chiming in....
    Driving 10.1 Miles , no drafting, going down rural road at like 3am in the morning, no wind and in florida so no hills or elevation at 65 MPH I got 56.9. See attached pic prius 65.jpg

    I just bought a Prime and noticed that in EV mode I get all 150 mpg bars, all the time, I'm not sure what that means. I also just noticed today at my trip position I'm getting 132 mpg for those miles. Before I bought it, somebody put on about 80 miles and the mpg was atrocious. I am only in HV mode just to Analyse, it doesn't seem to affect the mpg much. I believe that as with other Prii, the blending of ICE and battery is continuous and only varies according to how depleted the traction battery is. I'm really blown away by the incredible consumption figures.
    Sorry, to answer your question, you may select HV but, I don't believe that that pure ICE mobility is possible, unless the traction battery is wasted. Also, to make it even more confusing, on my 2012 PIP, whenever I ran out of charge, there was another source of battery power that aided the ICE until normal numerical readings again showed on the screen. I think the Prime probably works the same way. Still too new for me to tell.

    For my old PiP I would consistently get 10 mpg more in HV mode. For the Prime I have not had the chance (or really wanted to) - not plugin. I'm around 900 miles with over 50% EV, around 100 mpg while going to and fro from work that is about 98 miles round trip, sometimes plugging in on both sides, sometimes 1....

    But for giggles:
    • PiP yielded me around 55 mpg being plugged in on my 48 mile commute to work. The MPG took a hit with this weather, snow, 25 degrees.
    • The Prime yielded me 94 mpg while plugging in in the same weather. Of course I have a bigger battery but what really was awesome was the Heat Pump! I think the Prime would actually run toe-to-toe (or better) against a Volt Gen 1 or possibly Gen 2 in this weather!
    • I have no doubt that without plugging in I could get 55 mpg in this weather. This car is niiiiiice. I'm excited to take this to the next level when Spring hits.
    And FYI I haven't gotten any problems yet *knock on wood*
