Future US Fleet Vehicle Efficiency

    Some more insight into why Toyota is supporting the less strict auto energy bill. And some ideas of what may be in store in the future for vehicles. I would really like to see a direct injection gasoline engine come out.

    Direct-Injection gasoline engines are already on the market. It was first used in a production car in 1955 when Mercedes used a Bosch developed system in the 300SL. Direct injection was reintroduced to the US market around 2000 and today you can get DI engines from Audi / VW, BMW / Mini, Mazda, Chevy, Cadillac, and others.

    You may be thinking of HCCI or Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition engines. These are gasoline engines that use compression to ignite the fuel charge like diesel engines do. They are not on the market yet but several manufacturers and suppliers are testing vehicles.

    Yes, that is what I was thinking about. Didn't know it was that close to commercialization though.
