I got my hybrid stickers and was loathe to put them on my clean,
factory paint. So I left them on their square backings and taped
them from the inside out of my rear sloping windshield (behind
the dark glass) and on the rearmost (tiny) right-side-of-car-window.
These were both the smallest stickers.

Then I hopped on the freeway.

My very first time on during rush hour and a cop pulls up behind
me at 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. It took him some time
to speedup so I had time to slow down. He does the pressure thing
    and then backs off.

He took a good while to ascertain the speed had dropped, but more
importantly that I was a hybrid and my yellow stickers were visible.

This was in Orange County, CA on a VERY busy freeway - in a place
where the cops are not known for being nice guys.

Anyway, I was pretty pleased with the outcome. It was in the peak of
rush hour. If he had more time on his hands, perhaps he would have
pulled me over, I don't know.

I will NOT put those stickers on my paint not even knowing that it
isn't a permanent program and that I qualify.

It is expensive to repaint a car.

The stickers now expire in 2011.

I was loathe to put them on too, but the next cops may not be as forgiving. as I'm quite sure you were in violation of some CA vehicle codes. If you're going to use the those lanes while driving solo (or having under # of required passengers for non-qualifying vehicles) I'd put them on. I don't think cops or a judge will be that willing to let you off when you're in violation.

Is anyone reading this a lawyer who would care to chime in? I too have put them in the windows on the assumption that worst that can happen is a fix-it ticket. After all, you are allowed to be there...

or heres a good solution which i came up with (but ive been too lazy to actually do it yet)

i bought some high powered magnets (neodymium n48 strength, about the size of a penny each). im going to hot glue them on the inside of the bumper or wherever the stickers go, and stick the stickers to flexible magnetic strips (like on the fridge) so i can put them on and off as needed without messing up the paint

ill let you know how it goes :) itll be posted in the mods section when i have time to do it

Attorney yes, DMV law no (because there's not $$$ in it). Common sense (which the law is supposed to be modeled after) says if you block your window(s) you are just blocking your view of something. JUST PUT THEM where they go! Come on, humble out. Conform. It won't hurt your paint. The glue is very cheezy, and the stickers virtualy self destruct when one begins pulling them off (making them impossible to steal) . Eventually you'll forget the stickers are even on your car

I can't believe what a bunch of sticker-weenies you guys are. Just put the damn things on, and forgetaboutit, already. Its just a car, not some work of art family heirloom, get over the sticker shock!
