Firestone mechanic who changed my oil and air filter recommended at injection clean service ($80) since my air filter was very dirty.

    car's got 41K miles.

is he legit or just trying to take my money?

He's doing his job, which is to make money for the shop. You might want to consider it if you find the car running rough after 100,000 mi or so. Otherwise it's a waste of time and money.

BTW, if the injectors start to act up with 100,000 mi or more on them, they probably need changing anyway. They would be worn out. Usually they last much longer than that as well.

There is a maintenance list somewhere around on this site. Consult it. Injector cleaning isn't even mentioned.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

If you logically think about it: What do fuel injectors inject? Must be fuel right?
What does the air filter have to do with fuel? Nothing
Does fuel go through the air filter before it's injected? no. It comes from the gas tank.

    Conclusion: scam.
