My Prius just stalled out on highway from cruise control @ 65 mph, so I coasted luckily off an exit, and before coming to complete stop the whole dash went black with exception of power steering failure warning light. I had it towed, at my cost of $95, to dealer for troubleshooting. They found that the fuel sensing system/indicator had worn, and cost for repair is $422+, as not under any warranty or recall. Anyone else have similar events, please reply with ideas. Thanks,

    Bisco,

It is a known defect in Gen II Prii. Toyota gave certain VIN# cars a warrantly enhancement.

It could also be a bad sender unit in the tank. However, unlike the simple gas gauge of old, the ECU senses a "no gas" error, returns and error code and shuts down the car.

That can happen with any car. I had gas sensor stuck in my old nissan sentra under 100,000 miles and also run out of gas. They say that using quality gasoline with techrone prevents that.
OP: what brand of gas do you buy?
