I have long been of the opinion that all these capacitance switches have no place being in cars, because you have to look away from the road to work them. Turns our that Sir Jony Ive, former design chief at Apple has similar opinions:

I agree with him to a point. The problem is that, the Tesla Model 3, for example there are 573 options in the menus.
I didn't count but just guessed at the real number. So you can't just say to get rid of all these and add more physical buttons.
Do you really need a set of buttons to adjust the left and right side mirrors...or do you put that on the touch screen and remember it for each driver, that gets set by which key is used to unlock the car?
There are actually quite a few physical controls in a model 3, but there could be at least a few more IMO, specifically wipers and HVAC.

For some things it is totally silly to do NOT on the touch screen. For example setting up the homelink to open your garage door. With a screen you get a nice explanation of the steps and what to do. On my Prius when I did this I got some blinking LEDs that told me the status.

I'd love to see a return to physical controls, intuitive, ergonomic, eye-on-the-road ones. Any econobox from the eighties got it right; we have not progressed. I'd vote with my checkbook, in a heartbeat. Oh, and a spare please...
