For sale: 2005 Prius, 256k miles, dead HV battery/cat

For the price you are asking, it isn’t salable .

Drop the price in half and you’ll get interest.

Just worked on an 06 with 200 k miles with a bad battery that was sold for $800.

Drop the price and you’ll sell it.

 

An honest assessment from someone who looks at a lot of Prius ads on Craigslist and eBay:

hybrid battery is now dead
the catalytic converter needs replacing
256K miles
12V battery weak
Big crack in windshield
Track-back/channel-down button on steering wheel
Scuffs on both right fenders and dent in rear bumper
Both headlights <5 years old ------means coming due very shortly if not already doing 'the blink'
a two-foot plunge into a ditch under the right front wheel.
As a result the camber of that wheel has been a little off ever since
the frame in the front center of the vehicle is a little bent.
it does burn a bit of oil (five quarts in about 3,000 miles).

Honestly, that's a LOT of stuff. Some of it stuff that I would be very wary of being worse than realized.
Adding up all this, means most would run away from this:

(only?) That tells me you have a sarcastic sense of humor or you believe you're offering an excellent deal and probably wouldn't be open to significant negotiation.

I would consider it at a $500 price point, but you're way too far for me.

 

The big problems on your car are only HV battery and catalytic converter. But those 2 alone are very expensive in California.

I think if you dropped it to $1000 and list it as a mechanics special, it would sell

 

$800 is a bargain

 

Paint was fading bad, but all it took was 1 module and it’s back on the road.

@SFO got a great deal on it.

We got the trans fluid and oil changed before it got up 105 f today here.

It’ll make a good runner and another data point for us Prolong folks to have in our back pocket .

 

That's how I started.....with a cheap prius

 

The problem is I could find one of these three or four years newer with less than 125k miles and none of the issues for maybe $5000 to $6000. So most of us would spend the extra $$ on a clean used Prius rather than spending close to the same money making this one decent and still have the frame issue and all the unknowns a car with >250k miles brings. I would probably put a cat on it and Craigslist it for best offer while emphasizing it is driveable.

 

Op can't legally sell it without a working cat, the car cannot pass smog check for the transfer

 

I believe it could be sold as an non-op, but who would pay $1750 for that.

I believe California has a program that will buy you car for $1500 if it can't pass smog. It has to be running condition...So you kinda qualify

 

Going back to a good ole gen2, you know the saying "once you go back"....

While you might take a bath, older cars will have issues and experience repairs.

You need it to be running and pass smog. Otherwise it’s a non-op parts car.

Car repairs and maintenance items (tires, brakes, hoses, belts, etc.) are sunk costs. They equal just above zero in adding value. Items like dead HV battery, oil burning, and crash/body damage subtract from the value. I'd say $800 for a non-op parts car would be a generous offer.

 

Don't fix it, just let California have it for $1000 to $1500
