I'm a new account holder, but have benefited for years from the content on this site. Thank you all so much. I have just removed the console lid from my Gen2 prius to clean and re-affix the fabric, which was filthy and was entirely loose at the edges (as is typical after many years of use). The fabric is cleaning up well, but I was surprised to see the terrible state of the foam underneath the fabric. I'd like to replace it, which I suppose means buying some sort of foam sheet, using a spray adhesive, and cutting it around the edges to fit. However, I have no idea what specs exist for foam padding ... Thickness? Firmness? Has anyone replaced the foam who has the specs and/or a recommendation on a supplier/manufacturer?
Welcome to PriusChat!! Not sure if color makes a difference, but this @egg_salad post might be a viable option as well. For Sale - 2G Gray Vinyl Upholstered Armrest/Console Lid | PriusChat
It's like a 1/8 inch weak foam originally. Practically nothing. Go to a upholstery shop and find a 1/2 thick dense foam or least quarter inch to replace it. I don't think you'll be able to make the original fabric work with thicker foam. See if the shop has a remnant piece that kinda matches or you like and recover it. Thanks - I really appreciate the advice regarding getting new fabric and using a thicker foam. I went to a lot of trouble to get the original fabric perfectly clean (I tried many things - what worked in the end was entirely removing the fabric, soaking it in Whip-It for a few minutes, then rinsing and wringing it out in the sink, then laying out to air dry. I’m eager to attach it so it’s like new with this same (now cleaned) original fabric, and the only thing I need is a foam similar to the original foam.
Yes! Thank you all so much. I ended up ordering "Sponge Neoprene W/Adhesive 12in Wide X 1/8in Thick X 54in Long" on Amazon, cutting it to fit, and attaching it with Shoe Goo. It came out looking and feeling like new!
