So I got a nail too close to the edge of the tire for it to be repaired. I went to Sam's Club and was about to buy new tires when the salesman suddenly realized I only had 17,000 miles. He told me that Toyota should cover most of the cost (pro-rated) of a new tire since I'm still under the 36,000 mile warranty.
Has anyone heard of this before???

There's no warranty on OEM tires. Actually, there's a separate warranty by the tire manufacturer but useless for that purpose.

Ok, thanks. Figured I would get an idea of what I was in for before I called. Now to decided between sticking with the Goodyear Assurance or switching to something else...

Regardless of whether or not you purchase one tire or replace all 4, ask about a road hazard warranty. Most tire stores will sell you a road hazard warranty for around $45 that will cover flats due to a nail and other types of damage. They are prorated, but can save you money if you live in an area prone to this type of road debris.

Yikes - that tire salesman really knows nothing about what he is selling (yea, I know, what a surprise, doubly so as it is a Walmart company) - something to keep in mind if you go back to Sam's to buy the tires. Find out what they have that will fit and do your research before going back.

I called my dealership and asked just for the heck of it. Pretty much had to hold the phone away from my hear from all the laughing on the other end! Ended up just replacing the one tire with another Goodyear Assurance. Toyota dealership wanted $179 for just the tire, not including installation. My wife works at a BMW dealership who got us the tire for $120 out the door.
