    Hello,

Last Saturday, I purchased a Prius C III. I just filled up my car for the third time since buying it; the dealer bought my first tank. Between the second and third fill-ups, according to an app I use for calculating mileage, I only got 40.2 MPG.

The majority of the miles I've put on my Prius were highway ones going 60-70 mph. My most recent trip was to a city around 2 hours 20 minutes away from where I reside. I have a short trip to work that's roughly 10 miles (that's for going to & coming from) that I've taken M-F.

So, my question is this: What am I doing wrong? My dash MPG stays mostly in the high 30s & early 40s. It has been near 50 a few times, but not as much as I'd like.

wejo, welcome. Please consider updating your stats so we can provide better advice. There's a thread with a checklist concerning low fuel economy.

The 10 mile trips are killers as during most of that time the car is warming up. Figure 25mpg for the 1st 5 minutes, 50mpg for the 2nd 5 minutes & you get 37.5mpg for the trip.

I will almost guarantee your tires are soft. Check the tire pressure. Inflating to max sidewall will improve handling, improve fuel economy & prolong tire life.

It's cold so it's time to block the grill. Plenty of threads about that. It's a great return on investment because pipe insulation is cheap.

I can get high 40's to 50mpg on the Interstates.

It takes time to get used to the car. Relax, enjoy the ride, & things will get better.

    Hello,

What you are doing wrong, with all due respect, is failing to educate yourself. I realize (realise, for you Canadians) you are new here. There many, many, many, many, (a whole lot) of threads on Prius Chat that address fuel economy. It is much easier for a newcomer to search the site than for members to repeat over and over and over and over again the same answers to the same concern you have raised.

As a courtesy, allow me to direct you to an already existing thread or two or three:

440 MILES FROM START - only 44 MPG - SHOULD I BE WORRIED? | PriusChat

3rd fuel up. A little disappointed with my fuel economy | PriusChat

36.2 MPG for trips less than 2 miles not good | PriusChat

    Welcome and good luck.
