The longer I own my Prius and expect 500miles out of 10 gallons of gas, the more and more painful it is to fill up other cars. $70 to fill up the RX and it only goes 350 miles. Or 12 gallons in the sports car to take me 200 miles.

Makes me wonder how much anger all those people who only drive gas guzzlers must feel everytime they fill up...

Our Fiesta doesn't sting so bad...usually about 350 or so miles for 10gal.

I think we finally broke the cycle where we both needed it at the same time..that stung.

20 gallons for the jeep/minivan/vette... each only give us about 200-220 miles to a tank...

    Painful is the correct term.

$75 in the Dodge RAM diesel only got the needle to just over the 1/2 tank mark the other day.

They miss me at the gas station now...

I put $10 worth in the Prius the other day, and the gas gauge didn't even register. That much in the old motorcycle would have been more than two full tanks, and taken me over 400 miles.

I buy gas so infrequently that I can't remember what I pay for a tank.

I have only been on two wheels once since 1977, in 84 my little brother brought over his completed shovel and insisted I take it around the block... I do miss my brother... I used to love riden em... the last time I was run off the road by a driver passing on a curve by Belton Lake was enough for me; ... I sold both of the ones I had left that weekend... and not two months later, some Bandito ran a stop sign and totaled my 67 Z28... I had no wheels left... back then, we thought gas was pricey too.

Let's see.....I spent $39 filling up a Lancer Evolution IX. I don't really care. It's the first tank of gas I put in it this year. This summer I probably won't put more than $200 total of gas into it. Having a gas guzzler as a daily (e.g. just about any SUV) without a justifiable need (in which case its not painful) is just stupid.

Looking for a used work truck on Craigslist and am amazed by the number of ads that claim "great gas mileage". When you ask them for a number, they say 15-18 mpg!

We have been spoiled by 50+ mpg, makes anything else laughable!

Would love to find a late model 4 cylinder pickup or van that got 25+mpg, but they do not exist.

Not every work truck needs 4x4 with hemi....

I occasionally do the math on my last car. It wasn't inefficient by any means at 35mpg ('02 Accord). But 13 gallon fills would be over $50 at this point. I think what's really happening is that we are a 2-Prius household and spoiled rotten. I can't imagine putting 18 gallons of premium gas in my wife's former XC70 to lug it ~350 miles on a really outstanding day! (The space and luxury were awesome, but totally unnecessary for 2 humans and 2 dogs.)

My other vehicle a honda fit is the hauler. We haul things from the grocery store and hardware store. The urban pick up truck lol. The fit gits us over 35 miles per gallon combined and we complain because our prius gets over 53.

I hear ya, the Accord Coupe has a 18.5 gallon tank and usually takes on 15 to 16. It's basically 2x the gas usage of Prius. One consolation is I don't drive a heck of a lot, maybe 8k mi / year. Still Prius is 1/2 the usage.

Why is the Fit the hauler? My Prius is the hauler lol. Only thing I cannot fit in there is 4x8 sheets of plywood/drywall/durock but everything else has fit. A couple thousand feet of hardwood, a few hundred feet of heavy slate tile, studs and general purpose timber, even all the boards needed to make a deck. And even with 700-800lbs of slate in the back, I still got in the 40's. It looked like I had a dropped suspension, but hey whatever works. :)

I know. My first car was a 1973 Ford LTD. Ran at around 16MPG, on its 400 v8, and it ran horrible on regular unleaded, due to its low octane count. 26 gallon tank... But she was really something to look at. =P

Like I said, I am looking for a used work truck, mostly on Criagslist. When I ask sellers what the Gas mileage is on the truck they are selling they say, "I get 300 to 400 miles per tank". When you ask them what size tank they have they say, "Oh, it takes about $65.00 to fill."

Or they will say, "I drove to Las Vegas for $300". Most people don't have a clue what their mpg is!

A buddy of mine has an 2010 Dodge Charger and he's always complaining that it is costing him over $70.00 a week in gas. Last time we saw him my wife told him that she just had to fill the tank and this tank only lasted 23 days. His jaw dropped. Mind you he got the car maybe a month ago when fuel prices were already sky high. :der:

People are fools. Most I talk to always ask what kind of gas mileage I get and they're astonished. Then they jokingly tell me their numbers and it's end of coversation. They don't do anything about it and just put up with their SUVs, trucks, etc. These are coworkers who have no use for these gas guzzlers. If only they knew how good a Prius is and how much of a regular car it is, the conversation might not be limited to trading mpg numbers. Like I said, fools.
