A little more background: HybridFest 2006 had a 20-mile hypermiling event. A number of Prius' (5?) maxed out at 99.9mpg - Wayne had the only Insight to max out at 150mpg. I was left under the impression that it was reset before anyone thought of getting the metric readout, but apparently someone did, and it was 1.3liters/100km or about 181mpg.

I inquired ericbecky (organizer/founder of www.hybridfest.com ) if a plug-in Prius will make that run in 2007 and word is it's likely. Would love to see it's equavalent mpg.

    Hi All,

Now Wayne is a master at what he does, but its not magic. First off, he is driving for two hours one-way. So the car is warmed up most of the way. Second, he is driving the Accord, which has electric power steering, so he can do his FAS'g in a semi-safe manner, and eliminates the steering pump from the belt drive system. Third, the Accord also has an advanced variable valve overlap system with some Atkinson-like features for better efficiency at low-power operation. Fourth, while the Accord does not have the Prius drag coefficient, its not as tall (or have as much cross section) as the Prius either. A taller car also has worse drag when the airflow is off axis. So the air drag effects are probably similar. And finally, he does not drive faster than 50 mph, further reducing the effects of air-drag.

Additionally, Honda has all the F1 technology. Allot of which was spent developing nano-paterning of bearing surfaces. Supposedly, the pattern holds oil better, resulting in a higher pressure available on the bearing. So, the bearings can be made thiner, and have much less overall friction.
