Toyota fixes bZ4X wheel fall-off by using washers under wheel nuts
Toyota bZ4X was recalled because the wheels were falling off after a few miles of driving. It turned out that the problem was that there was too much friction on the hub-bolt threads or and/some seating surface, preventing the wheel nuts from making contact with the wheel at the specified torque (76 ft⋅lbf for most Toyotas) and being properly seated. I am not exactly sure what point in the fasteners was precisely the problem.
Solution: To use special conical spring washers under wheel nuts, redesigned hub bolts, and redesigned wheels. I guess bZ4X will be the first vehicle to ever use washers under wheel nuts.
I replaced the hub bolts on my light-blue 1985 Corolla LE (RIP) using this ball-joint separator, and ensuring that they were seated on the hub was not that easy.

Venza PHEV Coming?
https://www.motorbiscuit.com/why-toyotas-japanese-market-harrier-should-matter-in-the-u-s/
The Harrier for Japan is getting a PHEV drive train and would mirror the RAV4 Prime. The Harrier is the Japanese equivalent for the Venza in the NA market. Might get a smidge more or less AER than the RAV4 Prime because of the weight difference, but might pick up a little more efficiency with upgraded electronics. The Venza is currently rated at 39 mpg combined, the RAV4 hybrid is rated at 40 mpg combined. -

New CA laws to limit Cat Thefts
Finally, seems like some good news on this front.
It's harder in California to steal, sell catalytic converters - Los Angeles Times
"Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Sunday that he signed legislation to crack down on rampant vehicle catalytic converter theft by making it illegal for recyclers to buy the valuable car part from anyone other than the legal owner or a licensed dealer.
Lawmakers this year introduced a suite of bills to address an alarming increase in brazen thefts of catalytic converters, the anti-pollution devices in cars that contain valuable metals such as rhodium, platinum and palladium. The often untraceable parts are easy to saw off from a vehicle, making them an attractive target for those hoping to make a quick buck at a... -

autoevolution: Harvard Engineers Invent a Solid-State Battery That Never Dies, It's a Game Changer.
https://www.autoevolution.com/news/harvard-engineers-invent-a-solid-state-battery-that-never-dies-it-s-a-game-changer-198518.html
"The capacity retention after 20,000 cycles is above 82% at a 20C rate. The specific power is also impressive, at 110.6 kW/kg, with an energy density up to 631.1 Wh/kg."
To put those numbers in context, a Prius Prime battery with those specs could push the car 320 miles on a charge and produce enough electricity for a 15,000 HP motor.
Wow!
I'll take 30.
"Adden Energy is confident it can have commercial samples in the next three-to-five years."

Tesla has been cheating EPA on mpge and range numbers
If you compare the EPA mpge numbers for the Toyota Prius Prime vs. the most efficient Tesla Model 3 trims, you will see that they are about the same—Prius Prime itself having 133 mpge with similar numbers for the Model 3. However, how could this be given that the Prius Prime is a much lighter car that runs on much skinnier tires? Well, it isn't. The Tesla Model 3 has a lot lower mpge than the Prius Prime, but they somehow managed to find a way to overstate their mpge values, while virtually all other manufacturers conservatively understate them. The real-world mpge of Prius Prime vs. Tesla Model 3 is probably more like 3 to 2 rather than anywhere near being equal.
The way the range and mpge values work is that they are self-reported by the manufacturers to the EPA. It is an honor system, and we know from the Volkswagen scandal that it could be exploited. Edmunds tested the actual ranges for the EVs, and they found out that virtually all underestimate, many greatly, the real-world...Gokhan Sep 2, 2022 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 18,279 Likes: 0 Replies: 173 -
Go Electric Meets the Three Stooges.
California recently announced a bold plan to outlaw the sale of anything but electric vehicles starting in 2035. That sounds OK, but what's this just released by CAISO, the organization that is in overall charge of electricity in California?
NEWS RELEASE
HEAT BULLETIN
Aug. 30, 2022
During a Flex Alert, consumers are urged to reduce energy use from 4-9 p.m. when the
system is most stressed because demand for electricity remains high and there is less
solar energy available. The top three conservation actions are to set thermostats to 78
degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles,
So they want you to buy electric cars, but you can't charge them when it's hot...
