TOYOTA GAZOO Racing outlines 2017 motorsports activities (third TS050, Super GT Prius)
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Outlines 2017 Motorsports Activities | PRESS RELEASE | 2017 | OTHER MOTORSPORTS | TOYOTA GAZOO Racing
There's a couple things that are of interest here.
(2016-specification TS050 with Gen 4 Prius)
Toyota's announced that there'll be a third TS050 entered into the 6 Hours of Spa-Franchorchamps, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. José María López joins Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi in one of the two full-season World Endurance Championship entries, displacing Stéphane Sarrazin, who will drive the third car at Spa and Le Mans, along with two as of yet unnamed drivers. (Worth noting that Porsche is not entering a third 919 at either race, so Toyota may have an advantage here.)

New Crash Tests - Prius Prime and Chevy Volt top picks
There are multiple sources for this story but some 'buried the lead'. Source: New Crash Tests Reveal Which Plug-In Cars Are Safest - Consumer Reports
Two out of four electric and hybrid cars recently tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety performed well enough to earn the organization's coveted Top Safety Pick+ designation: Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Prime.
The BMW i3 and Tesla Model S performed well in IIHS crash tests, but each raised concerns that kept them from attaining IIHS Top Safety Pick status.
. . .
For what it is worth, I'm driving our Prius Prime Plus in EV mode this week. Then I'll probably switch back to the BMW i3-REx.

Gasoline Prices Retreat
One common theme has been the importance of gasoline prices in helping buyers go green with efficient cars and trucks. So this article bears reading and thinking about: After Steady December Climb, Gasoline Prices Retreat in January | TheDetroitBureau.com
After climbing during the last month of 2016, the price of gasoline has retreated for the past three weeks, dropping to $2.27 per gallon, which is down four cents per gallon from a week earlier, according to the survey by AAA.
AAA said the growth in the number of U.S. oil rigs and the increased drilling it implies are raising expectations for a climb in domestic oil production.
Meanwhile, increased U.S. crude oil production and reduced demand has exerted pressure on the national average price at the pump, which has fallen for 21 consecutive days, AAA said.

Electric Car Pollution Study
Source: New Study Says EVs Actually Create Pollution in the Midwest
The study, published in American Economic Review, asserts that because the Midwest relies heavily on coal for electricity, the region sees higher pollution due to the increased presence of EVs. This is so, it says, at least when compared with other regions, which don’t use coal to produce electricity.
Every now and then, you see an article that shouts 'need to check this out.' Like the old "Dust-to-Dust" report that was so throughly discredited, here is a new one. Rather than discuss and article about a paper, it makes more sense to read the paper itself: American Economic Association
A free copy can be downloaded for a proper critique and review. But several things stand out:
- disproportionate EV presence - we...

if you are looking at a new plugin or EV which is more important, range or MPGe?
Just found this article
Electric-car MPGe as important as range, Hyundai Ioniq maker suggests
it suggests MPGe should be important than range when considering cars
ignoring the fact the article is written to highlight the Ioniq (yes I drive a hybrid Ioniq), what are other member thoughts when considering cars,
ignoring brands / models do you look only at range on electric?, only efficiency (MPGe) or both (if so which is the more important)
if you choose a plug in is the range very important? do you choose a plug in with enough range on electric to cover most of your commute / day to day journeys?
personal I looked at both range and efficiency, but for me on my budget there isn't an EV / plugin with enough range to meet my requirements but as the efficiency improves there may well be in a few years
the other question raised in the article is what...Bluecar1 Jan 28, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 7,550 Likes: 1 Replies: 118 -

EV Batts
"There is now concern in the auto manufacturer world that there will be a shortage of electric car batteries as demand takes off, Automotive News Europe (Gibbs, January 2, 2017) reports. Just a year ago, Volkswagen had decided that batteries were over-supplied. Now, they are scrambling for batteries as they gear up to sell more electric cars. Those who follow the auto industry point out that a year ago, Volkswagen was building “clean” diesel cars instead of electric, but since the diesel emissions reporting scandal, Volkswagen is now depending on electric cars to fill its clean car requirements. But Volkswagen is not alone. Most European car makers are ramping up production of electric cars. Tesla does not plan to worry about battery shortages. It has... -

Reports of Prius death have been greatly exaggerated
Source: http://wardsauto.com/industry/toyota-down-sales-prius-upside-rav4-hybrid
DETROIT – Toyota is calling for 75,000 sales of its Prius liftback variant in 2017, 23,866 fewer than it sold in 2016.
The reason? Weak market demand for hybrid cars.
“We’re going to follow the market, but we think we have the supply-and-demand (equation) pretty much dialed in,” Bob Carter, senior vice president-automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. tells WardsAuto in an interview here.
. . .
Toyota sold 98,866 Prius liftbacks last year in the U.S., down 12.9%. The 5-year-old Prius V wagon and Prius C compact hatchback fell 47.4% and 46.7%, respectively, to 14,840 and 20,452, while sales of the Prius plug-in hybrid were down 40.8% to 2,474.

Plug-in sales growth
First be careful as percentages can be misleading: AD #2028 – BMW Hurting for SUVs, Tesla Cleared in Autopilot Investigation, 2017 Auto Industry Outlook – Autoline Daily
EV’S, PLUG-INS GROW THE FASTEST
Amazingly, despite cheap gasoline prices all last year, the hottest segment in the U.S. market was for electric cars and plug-ins. That segment grew 30% and over 150,000 were sold, with 70,000 being plug-ins and 80,000 electric. Plug-in sales grew the most, largely thanks to some new entrants and by strong growth from the Chevy Volt, the Ford Fusion Energi and BMW X5e. Most EVs are only sold in a limited number of states. They’re not available nationwide. So there’s a lot of upside potential. But before you get too excited they still represent less than 0.8% of the total market.
The problem with percentages and small quantities is it can give the impression of greater growth...bwilson4web Jan 23, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,577 Likes: 2 Replies: 18 -
