You can take up the extended warrenty any time up to the expiry of the standard warrenty. From most of my reading in PC, I get the feeling that it is not really needed - it appears that only the occassional car has a problem that would benefit from having the extended warrenty.

I am not an old hand yet - only had my Prius for 6 weeks, but have spent nearly all my free time reading all the different threads in PC. My dealer asked me if I wanted it, told him no, and then he told me that if I want to reconsider over the next three years, just let him know.

Say no, thank you. You don't need it. If you really want it, buy it here. Everything the dealer is pushing is overpriced and/or unneeded.

At first, my husband talked me into getting the extended warranty and pre paid service. After I found out that you can get an extended warranty on PC from Troy for a fraction of the price, I quickly canceled. I will buy the $990 deal from Troy soon. Just do a search on extended warranties and you should be able to find a post with the info.

Peace of mind for a few years is worth $990 to me.

For reference, my dealer sold me a 6year/75,000 mile warranty for $2500
    Troy's is 7 year/100,000mile warranty for $990,

The PC search engine didn't like "extended warranty", so I found this link for you.

    Good Luck

    Worked for me.

Air conditioning compressor just went out at 55k miles on my '05.

    Total cost $1,333

Cost to me (other than cost of warranty from Troy) $0

Total savings so far $300 :D

I bought the extended warranty from Troy. Turns out, I never used it. Just turned 100,000 miles the other day. Would I do it again? Yes. Having the warranty gave me peace of mind. And getting it from Troy was definitely the way to go. He made it very easy, and he's a nice guy.

We got extended warranties from the dealer: top-of-the-line, bumper-to-bumper, 8-year policies. Turned out they sold us National Warranty Co policies. When I had a complaint about the rear alignment being "in the red" on both the '05 and the '06, they said Toyota won't cover it, it goes to the extended-warranty co, and that they won't cover it either. I made them file with the extended-warranty co and then petition them when they rejected the claim.

I'm going back today to demand my money back on both extended warranties. I'm convinced there are no possible claims they could not reject for one reason or another. When I first demanded my money back they said any refund would be pro-rated. I insisted I want it all back, since (a) it was never in effect (car is 14 months old) and/or (B) it is a fraudulent policy (fails to cover undamaged, non-wear parts or labor).

btw - just got the official word from Toyota factory rep that they will not consider the misalignment a problem to be fixed on either car: the parts are good, they're non-adjustable, the only way to notice is to put it on an alignment rack.
