Extended Warranty

The dealer I bought mine was giving me the extended warranty for $1500.00 instead of $1800.00 good for 90 days after the purchase.

 

The only advantage is in case of a price increase, but Troy uaually gives us a heads up. I just got my 5/yr125k warranty from him for $900 and some odd bucks.

 

Does the ext. warranty cover navigation unit?

He's a VERY nice guy and will answer all your questions happily. He deserves our business because he's been giving us a great deal on the warranties from the beggining.

 

Toyota's are rated as the most reliable cars in the world. They do not need an extended warranty.

 

Yeah, i was thinking that, esp. the Prius which has had stellar reliability records. But, 2010 is a new model....

 

I have 29,000 miles on my Gen 2010. I have had zero issues. If you read any of the Gen I, II, III forums you will find the all the models are extremely reliable. Again, it is a Toyota, the most reliable car in the world.

I have always recommended against extended warranties for the reasons listed above but the cost of fixing some of the expensive electronics, i.e. Nav, DRCC, PCS, etc, is making me have second thoughts. I ask Troy if that stuff was covered and he assured me it was.

One advantage is you can be relieved of your money earlier, rather than later.

Seriously, I don't believe in extended warranties. These companies are in business to make money (your money). I think of it as insurance, and prefer to self-insure.

I hope you are right. I bought my IV July 22 and have 41K miles on it. I have an extended warranty for 100K which will probably be done in another 18 months. It cost $1900 which is very high, except if I don't use it I get my money back. So it is a gamble either way.

What should I do after 100K miles? I hear advertisements for older car warranties, but I'll bet they won't be cost-effective for a Prius.

My last car was a 2000 Toyota 4Runner. I had it for 10 years and put 305,000 miles on it. Over the life of the car I had a total of $1,000 in repairs. Nothing needed fixed until I had over 200,000 miles.

If you take care of your Toyota it will last forever.

 

I have usually avoided the extended warranties, but in discussion with the dealer I got them down to $950 for a four year 125K miles warranty (I drive 45k miles a year). But the kicker is that if their are no claims the dealer will refund the full warranty purchase price to me in cash (not off another car). Si i thought I really couldn't lose. Can anyone get this deal or was it only my dealer offering it?

 

What are you going to do after 36,000 miles if something cheap breaks? Maybe a $100 repair? Will you pay it out of pocket because you might get your $950 back?

Stay away from extended warranties on Toyota’s. Extended warranties are created for the provider of the warranties to make money. In the long run they do make money.

Sometimes people do not do any research and they buy a car like a Land Rover. It is guaranteed to be in the shop for something ever month. The top 3 companies (all Toyota) do not have those issues.

 

You are exactly right. Becasue of Toyota reliability I would not have bought the extended warranty. But I have the option to use it or not. In your example, if I have a $100 repair and over 100k miles I will simply pay for the repair to avoid the claim and get my refund. The way I see it I am only betting the use of my $950 for 3 to 4 years to either have it returned to me or used as the total cost for a potentially much larger repair bill. That seems to make economic sense to me.

I purchased a brand new Toyota Camry 6 cylinder station wagon in 1994. It was a piece of junk, but did not fall under the lemon law. Toyota did nothing to help me out. I kept it for 10 years and 65,000 miles, when I gladly got rid of it for a Volvo, which turned out to be a great car. Earlier this year, I decided to get a Prius, for the high MPG. I recognized that it had a great reputation, but only time will tell.

A co-worker, with a 1994 4 cylinder Camry sedan, also had nothing but trouble with his. Another co-worker, with a 1994 6 cylinder Camry sedan, also had nothing but trouble with hers. Both swore they would never buy another Toyota, and they haven't. Seems like 1994 was not a good year for the Toyota Camry.

I just hope I didn't make a huge mistake getting rid of the Volvo - but it had over 100,000 miles, and repair costs can get to be very high.

 

If you take care of an older toyota yes it will last. Over the last 3 or 4 years their quality has taken a big step backwards.
