I requested a quote for an extended warranty on the PriusChat thread through Warranty Shack for 7/100,000, and 8/125,000. I was wondering if it is better to wait closer to 36,000 miles, or when the car gets a bit older before buying. So if I buy a warrantt when the car is three years does it add 7 years of warranty from that point, or from the date that the car was purchased? Also what if I sell the car or never use the warranty. If the warranty is never used and I still have the car, do I get some money back? This is the case with my Subaru. Last question: I requested a quote for the 8 year/125,000 mile, is this the way to go since I keep my cars as long as I can if they are good, and reliable.

I should be 7 years from when the car was brand new.
You need to check bust most warraty can be transford to the new onwer, adding value to the car.

Most people on here wil tell you your wasting your money on any type of warranty.

I plan on keeping the car for at least 8 years. I'm a bit concerned because the car has some much technology that something expensive might go wrong. We have used the extended warranty on our 06 Subaru quite a bit. Any advice would be much appreciated. The people on this site are awesome! PriusChat is just another perk of owning a Prius!

I purchased right after buying my Prius, but decided to wait till right before the warranty expires to purchase one on our HS. Rational: Not sure if we will keep it or trade for something new. My wife tends to change vehicles every three or so years, so with a 4 yr/50K mile warranty, it made more sense to wait on hers. If we decide to keep it, we'll probably purchse the warranty then.

A transferable warranty does add some value, but not enough to justify the cost if you don't keep a vehicle for a long time. We purchased an extended warranty on our 2008 CRV, and never used it, when we traded for the HS we contacted the dealership about getting a refund. We ended up getting back just shy of half what we paid. So, if there is any doubt at all as to whether or not you may keep the vehicle past the warranty expiration date, I would hold off until just prior to it expiring.

The previous generations Prius have nearly as much technology but have been around for over 10 years and proven to be extremely reliable. The vast majority of these owners have not had to coup with expensive repair bills. Subarus are a different animals when it comes to reliability.

I just read in another post the excluded items in the platinum extended warranty. Is it true that the hybrid system and battery are not covered?

The Hybrid system is already covered by an 8 yr/100K mile warranty, so it would be kind of redundant for Toyota to include it in an extended warranty...
