EV range in real world?

    I've only got 17 miles. Isn't it crazy? A non-EV mpg after battery depletion is ~51 though.

    we saw the same with pip, some got 16-18, and some got 8-9. do you do a lot of highway or mountains?

    How do you drive and where do you drive? Terrain? Weather?

    Jack Rabbit starts, hard stops, cold weather, uphill climbs will all kill your range. This last week I have trained my car to believe I can go 28 miles on a charge (no ac). It has been inching up from 22 miles. Smooth starts and long regenerative stops do a lot to extend your range.

    Mostly highway. Temperature mild. Mostly flat. Donno why EV mode only reaches 17 miles.

    How long have you had the car? My first couple of days, I got around 17, then increased each day over the first two weeks. Last week, about 2 1/2 weeks in, I hit 1500 miles, and I saw increased performance and mpg, both EV and HV modes.

    Needs to learn your usage pattern.
    PG 100 of manual.
    The EV driving range may change significantly with each charging
    until the electricity consumption based on the recorded value is stable
    (for approximately the first month or two). However, this does not indicate
    a malfunction.

    Range is directly proportional to how fast you're going. The higher your speed the lower your range

    yep, highway speed being 55+? it ain't going up. that's not how the epa test works. you could try pumping your tyres up, or make a nose cone. that front end is deadly at highway speed.

    Maybe that's why. 80mph translates into 17 miles EV range but I am impressed with 51mpg already.

    17 miles at 80 per is pretty dang good. not to mention 51 mpg.(y) not sure i'd call it real world though, maybe in cali.:p

    Hmm, interesting. I wouldn't think Normal mode would use EV to depletion at 80mph.

    any mode will use ev to depletion, the prius modes only remap the accelerator, and some engine temp reduction in hv mode. what do you mean exactly?

    I go on highway 70 mph and travel a mix between 80% 20% for highway/backroads.

    I have on my meter 24.2 miles EV with heat pump. I do manual switches to HV mode while climbing hills though. One thing that I don't understand is the EV Auto mode. I've gunned the car to go fast and it doesn't switch to HV so I am totally unsure how it works or if it's even beneficial.

    I'm trying to train my car like I did my PiP in which I got it to say 19 miles of EV range because I would use EV anywhere there was a decline and not push it. I'm curious to see if I can get 30 by using this method (and therefore getting worse HV mpg but better overall MPG).

    Ok, here's the latest for me. Climate off, no defrost. Outside temperature 35 degrees. round trip all EV 24.2 miles. EV left 2.7 miles. So total estimated EV 26.9 miles. Fastest speed traveled, 45 MPH, average speed 35 MPH.:eek:

    According to the OM, EV Auto mode should: "Switching to EV auto mode make powerful driving possible by using both the gasoline engine and electric motor in a driving condition that requires large driving force, such as when passing a vehicle on a highway or driving on a steep slope"

    Driving 80mph on a system with an 84mph EV limit should, IMO, use both (blend). Guess not. :(

    you're conflating driving modes with operational modes. i think.

    driving: eco/normal/power modes

    operational: ev/ev auto/hv/charge modes

    Yeah, the OM uses the term "modes" for both function buttons; very confusing. So to clarify my original question, what operational mode was californiaprius in: EV Auto or EV mode?
