    Hello
I have a 2017 prius prime plug in
It has 57,000 miles on it

typically upon full charge I was able to get 30-32 miles on electric only

the last three months it only charges up to 22-23 miles on electric only

i brought the car to toyota and was told that there is nothing wrong

    anybody else have this experience?

32 sounds high but not unheard of. I, personally, have been getting 25(ish) and my car is 2 yrs old
but has very low mileage eg. 4K miles.

Mine fluctuates constantly between about 24 and 35 depending on driving conditions and weather.

Has your miles/kWh number changed? How about how many kWh it takes to charge the battery? Range is the product of capacity in kWh and m/kWh and tells us nothing about the battery's condition. The main metric is how many kWh it holds.

Are you talking about the EV range displayed on GOM (Guess-o-Meter) or actual EV range driven on a full charge? Either way, they do change depending on the way you drive and other factors like temperature. That being said a rapid drop of 10 miles is unusual. For me, it usually drops gradually during summer to winter temperature shifting from 35 miles to 25 miles. Can it be related to the COVID-19 stay-home? If you are doing only very short (less than 10miles) stop and go drives, it will tend to decrease the EV range.

Good point. That'll make a huge difference.

When the COVID19 lockdowns came into effect, mine 2017’s range dropped to about 21 miles, rebut has since recovered to ~26.

Then again, it was previously down to 28ish. That, after dropping to 25ish for a year.

When I bought it, for about 9ish months, it was at ~34 miles range, then it dropped in three distinct steps down to 25ish over the course of a week or so. It stayed there for a year or so, as I mentioned, the went back up to 28, again within a week’s time.

My Theory is that the charging algorithm is adjusting the amount of top charging margin for cyber-fear of battery damage. People here who have used CAN-based monitoring tools like OBD Fusion, have found no evidence that it does so, but it’s hard to see how physical battery degrade could occur over the course of a few days, then reverse itself also over the course of a few days.

Speed (i.e., wind resistance) makes a substantial difference for me.

Yup. Huge difference. And every hard stop (using friction instead of coasting & regenerating) from around 50 mph will cost about half to 3/4 mile of range.

Actually, just for the record, it went backup to 28-30ish after its initial slump down to 25ish for a year. Anyway...

Overcoming wind is non-linear as a function of speed. Depending on the aerodynamic characteristics it can be as bad as v-squared in come cases.

It's like measuring how much liquid a container holds. You pour liquid from a measured container into the empty one till it's full and see how much came out of the metered container. But in this case, it'll always be an approximation because in HV mode, the Prime can dip quite a ways into the HV portion of the battery. That will vary, so the most accurate way is to track how many kWh it takes to charge from 0 EV miles to a full charge and look for long term trends.

I just started doing this in January and here's what I have so far. EV range was anywhere from 0.1 mile left to 0.5 miles past empty. This is a 2017 with about 44,500 miles on it as of now.

Very interesting. I have a ~26 mi commute, uphill to work. So the last four or five miles are on gas. I charge at work, and on the return I have about 25% or 30% left on my battery. If there were some way to add a few batteries and get an extra ten miles of electrical range, I'd never have to buy gas again. Has anyone done that?

Toyota did. It's called a RAV4 Prime. :) I'm pretty sure replacing the Prius with the RAV4 would be cheaper than trying to shoehorn in more battery without setting it on fire.

Huh. Interesting idea. But installing a Rav4 Prime in my Prius Prime would require expensive body work! :)
But thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll look at the 2022 model, should I live so long.

lots of people, but it's no mean feat. in japan you can get prime with solar roof, so you're charging while driving. probably get you to work on a sunny day

Toyota claims it will add up to 3.7 miles per day. (Of course, those would be under ideal conditions. When an advertiser says, "up to," that actually means "guaranteed less than.")

Just the other day on my way home from work I drove 23.56 miles and the battery still showed 51% left. Drive is relatively flat with the odd hill and averaged 23 mph. Lots of varied speeds in stop and go.
Stats from Drive Monitor 2 showed:

    5.05179 miles/kWh
    20.64 miles of range left
    Trip Total Regenerated: 1025 Wh

Car has 32,000 miles on it, so I'm doing pretty good.

Not a Prime expert, but 3 year's ownership and 57,000 miles (under 100,000kms) it does not seem right to me. it is a huge loss of battery capacity. If normal I find it scary.

The two may not be closely related, but as I said it elsewhere, we have a Mitsubishi iMiEV, six years and 42,000km and the battery range is the same as it was when new.
