    Since 1997, when Toyota introduced the world's first production hybrid vehicle, the Prius, 16,066 Canadians have joined the ranks of green consumers by purchasing a low-emission, fuel-efficient gasoline/electric hybrid from Toyota or Lexus. By adopting this advanced technology designed to help them reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, they have managed to lessen the impact of their lifestyle and activities on the environment.

    The Japanese automaker has since expanded its hybrid offerings with the clean, efficient and powerful Camry Hybrid sedan and the Highlander Hybrid midsize SUV, not to mention the GS 450h luxury sedan and the RX 400h luxury crossover from its premium division Lexus.

    The numbers...

    * So far in 2007, 8,039 Priuses have been sold in Canada;
    * In May alone, more hybrids (1,008) were sold than during the first three years of the Prius;
    * In Canada, one Highlander out of three is hybrid-powered ;
    * The Camry Hybrid, chosen as the 2007 Car of the Year, found 4,155 takers since its 2006 introduction, which represents 18 percent of all Camrys sold across the country;
    * Launched in May 2005, the Lexus RX 400h accounts for 25 percent of all RX sales. At the end May 2007, Lexus had sold 1,976 units;
    * As for the GS 450h, it accounts for no less than 63 percent of the GS' total sales.
    * Overall, Toyota hybrid sales have reached the million plateau (1,047,000) across the world.

    I guess all the government incentives are working, plus the increased cost of fuel and environmental awareness. Now if we could just get our government to improve our power generation to offer more renewables, and oh course Toyota, we need a plug-in. The BC government is still pushing the hydrogen highway, it's just such a wrong direction to go.

    I'm just surprised at the number of GS450hs and HiHys in Canada given their price!
