If I put the Prius in park while I get out and mail a letter, engine temp is 190, I can get back in and drive off on electric, zero rpm's. However, if I push the start/stop button, mail the letter, and restart the engine (temp is still 190), I cannot get the engine to spool down. It keeps running for a few minutes. I'm wondering if this is a programming issue.??
Probably an emissions issue. The car does all sorts of weird things compared to traditional non hybrid cars, but it looks after itself. Sometimes EV mode is available, others it isn't. It's all to do with different temperatures, loads etc. Unless a warning message and/or lamp is lit then I wouldn't worry.
Don't turn it off. If you do, you should be able to press the EV button after Ready and that will prevent start up (if conditions are met).
Agree w/ above. Check inverter reservoir level, is pump working? Are you using your AC, it cools the HV Battery. Read all previous post on a PC Search. Think about how hot it gets in Arizona! Your HV needs cooling.
the engine has cycles.. stages.. once you restart it.. it restarts counting the stages.. the final stage before it shuts down requires the car to move.. or at least sit on for a bit... as said above.. stop turning it off if it bugs you that much. it's like jumping into a traditional car and complaining that the starter has to turn on... or course it does.. it's a starting cycle... the stages of warmup can be found in the forums... there are 4 if i remember correctly. usually in order to get the engine off, that final stage requies speed and time... something like engine temp up along with hitting at least x mph... and coming to a full stop...
