Toyota is recalling a large number (~700k) Priuses over a wiring harness issue that could potentially cause a fire if left unrepaired over a long time. No fire has been reported yet, but there has been smoking.

The remedy is not ready yet, but will basically be a rubber sleeve to protect the wires inside from rubbing metal components. It is simple so I imagine it will be ready soon.

    Check your VIN here.

Edit: Not sure if this should go in maintainance. Mods, sorry if so.

    Description

Safety Recall J0T (Interim J1T) - Interim Notice Certain 2016 - 2018 Model Year Prius Engine Wire Harness

The subject vehicles have an engine wire harness which is connected to the hybrid vehicle Power Control Unit. A portion of the wire harness could contact the cover at this connection and wear over time, causing an electrical short circuit, which can generate heat. If sufficient heat is generated, there is an increased risk of a vehicle fire.

    Remedy
Toyota is currently preparing the remedy for this issue. When the remedy becomes available, Toyota dealers will check the engine wire harness assembly. If a wire core is exposed, the engine wire harness assembly will be replaced with a new one that includes a protective sleeve. If a wire core is not exposed, protective tape will be installed on the engine wire harness assembly. The repair will be performed FREE OF CHARGE to customers.

If the remedy is just some tape, I’d say you could DIY it.

The work instructions will eventually be posted on NHTSA’s website. There’s nothing there or on the Japan MLIT recall page yet, but Toyota’s website in Japan has an announcement and illustration with a few more details (all pages in Japanese).

The key repair information will be the parts of the wire harness to inspect for damage, the kind of tape to use, and where and how to apply it. You can get a general idea on the first point from the illustration from Japan: the red circle, near the low-voltage connector on the top of the inverter with converter assembly (labeled “PCU,” power control unit), highlights the area of possible failure.

    [IMG] 1. Problem status
In the electrical wiring in the engine room, due to lack of consideration of assembly variation, there is a wiring that interferes with peripheral parts at a place without a protective cover. As a result, the covering of the wiring may be damaged due to vibration during running, causing short-circuiting between the wiring and heating, resulting in burnout. In the worst case, there is a danger of vehicle fire.

    2. Content of improvement
Inspect all vehicles, wiring concerned and add protective materials for those with no damage to the covering. Also, if the covering is damaged, replace it with a new one with added protective material.

Just take it to your dealer when details are revealed - it'll be a recall, means TOYOTA'll pay for it. Plus - it may not be all VINs till we see the final recall notice in our own countries.

Here is a picture of what is depicted in that Japanese diagram. There is tons of gap so I’m not sure how it could possibly rub.

The announcement from Japan refers to 組付ばらつき (assembly variation), so it may well be that your car and mine don’t exhibit the problem. Perhaps the wire bundle from connector C33 (the rightmost of the two connectors on top of the inverter with converter assembly) wasn’t always placed in the same way as it enters the protector.

I checked my VIN on the website and clearly mine has the recall. Can't everybody do that?

It wasn't working last night - I'll try again.

[EDIT - it's still not up on the TOYOTA Australian Recall listing]

    It looks good to me.

Maybe Mendel can put a circle around the affected area, and repost this picture. I haven't mastered that trick yet. Thanks.

My Prime is not on the recall list, as is also confirmed by the updated article in the news. But I checked by VIN anyway. Nope. Maybe they'll expand the recall, but until if/then, there's nothing to see here if you own a North American Prime.

How many kilometres/miles has your 2016 done? - when I looked at your photo, compared with my May 2016 ca - which I'd just gone outside to look at - mine is almost spotless, like the photo from Starship, yours looks like it's been somewhere quite dusty/dirty, or done a lot more work than mine (34,000km on mine).
