engine rumble

    I happened to be outside of the car just after I had started it, and heard a distincted rattle as the ICE turned on. It disappeared after 5-10 secs. It sounded like the engine (or something) was loose. Any ideas. Don't hear it inside cause it is so quiet.

    When engine start is called for, the control system dry cranks the engine before fuel injection occurs. You are most likely hearing the backlash in the planetary power split device as the generator (MG2) is cranking the engine. I don't think it is any cause for alarm. You might also hear a rattle when the engine shuts off. The control system "indexes" the crankshaft position at shutdown to provide a smoother start.
