Engine removal diy advice is it possible?

    Sorry if this has been posted before I couldn't find it.

    My 2010 Prius needs a new engine. My mechanic will do it for 1000 but I'd like to do it if possible. Biggest job I've done is head gaskets before.

    I've done a little research and looks like disconnecting the electricity and jacking the car up high enough to drop the engine below is important.

    Can u do this job without a lift?

    Is there any tutorial with pictures of the job online?

    Do you need special tools?

    Yes you can do it without a lift, but much easier with one. What state are you in? I know some mechanic will do it for less, it's not that hard. It's just heavy.

    engine removal is done from front with bumper and radiator removed

    A word of caution. I recently had the engine on my 2011 (302,000 miles) replaced due to head gasket issues and the high mileage. Had a 2014 engine installed (49,000 miles) by the dealer. The tech had some difficulty in removal and in the process fractured the windshield. Of course they ate that little item. They mentioned that the windshield extends into the engine compartment a bit and was bumped during the lift out. (At least that's what they told me.) Best of luck.

    I did it myself last week, with a 2x4, straps, plywood, welding rods,4 jackstands and hydrolic 2ton jack. <3

    All this "Toyota has no idea how to write a shop manual" when every blue infobn.png button in a TIS manual is a link that takes you straight to a whole fahrvergnügen illustrated procedure for completing that step??

    I used a Haines manual and yes the $300+ I spent on the factory manuals did not return my investment

    Mine came from TIS as individual .mht files, so the "links" didn't, and I have a life to live instead of making them all work.

    When you're viewing the manuals on TIS, the links all just work, you don't need to do anything to make them. On days when I'm really feeling like I've got a life to live and just want to solve my problem fast (like yesterday, when I was baffled by the C1451-from-hell), I just feed them $15 and solve my issue and move on to fun things.

    I agree there are plenty of good reasons to hang on to local copies and refer to them later, even if the links get lost in the process. I just figure it might not be quite fair to Toyota to grumble how they have no idea how to write a manual, just because it's harder to use when the links have been lost. :)
