    @ 185K miles

    symptoms:
    • Engine shake at cold start (once every 2-3 days... only in the morning)
    • engine consuming oil
    • coolant in reservoir slowly going down
    • heater not blowing hot for first 10 mins or drive
Already serviced the EGR system 10k miles ago.

Called a couple of local hybrid shops and all are saying that at 185k miles they recommend engine rebuild or engine swap.

Avg. quotes from local trusted shops with great reviews:
    • $3,800 for engine rebuild
      • 1 week turnaround
      • 6 mo. warrantee
    • $3,800 for JDM complete engine swap
      • 50k miles
      • 1 week turnaround
      • 1 mo. warrantee
      • only part of engine that gets reused is the intake manifold
I'm going to go through with one of these options. I'd like to get some feedback from you guys.

    Questions:
    1. Do any of you have experience with a rebuild or a Japanese engine swap?
    2. Any advice on what to look out for within these two options?
    I appreciate your feedback.

You should look into what is available for all ZZ engines as far as rebuilding goes there's not a lot of rebuilding going on in these so there's always that If there's any issues with your reciprocating mass you buy that whole section reciprocating mass pistons connecting rods crankshaft etc that's the center section of your engine all the rest of the metal attached to your engine is girdles and strengthening pieces that reciprocating mass from Toyota is about $1,800 brand new whatever you want to call it from Toyota If you haven't cracked your girdles and your other parts of the engine they need to be checked You're in pretty good shape so that means you didn't run it while it was rattling very much. On an engine coming from the Asian market they're not treated very well they're thrown on boats they get wet all kinds of nonsense goes on because it is salvage scrap if they sell one engine out of a whole lot they're still an okay shape because it's trash and it's treated as such so beware of that It may be more respectable for you to get the reciprocating mass replaced in the engine pieces that you have put the mess back together and Hope for the best always keeping in the back of your mind that this is not your dad's Toyota these are not keeper vehicles Just make certain you are aware of these things because you are putting money into something that you're not going to get a lot of return out of nothing like the Toyota's that we've had for the last 40 some odd years we've made 400k on almost every one of those they have not been a poor vehicle in those years not for us anyway nothing like Chevy citation fiasco's and all that fun stuff We went right through all the '80s without doing anything all those years on our Toyotas The fun didn't start till 2010
