My Prius is 2007, 87000 miles currently, we use it couple time a week for short distance in the city. (doing 8000 miles per year).

So I have a bottle of Castol Edge Oil (5w-30 Fully Synthetic) that was for my previous car (VW Passat).
Some online search results are saying Castol Edge 5w-30 is fine for Prius. However, the bottle I have states for Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porche, Skoda & Seat Cars, and mention nothing about other make of cars including Toyota.

So my question is as follows:
    1. Are all Castol Edge oil the same in which I can the bottle now on Prius without causing problem?
    2. Will Prius benefit from frequent oil change @ 5000 miles/6month like other conventional car?
    3. What is usually the best oil for fuel efficiency?

    Thanks.
    Vicky

    Check out
AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-20 Synthetic Motor Oil

It's rated up to 25k miles.
I use it to 30k and my oil tests via Blackstone labs show great!

The Castro 5w-30 is fine for the prius. Basically any brand oil with that grade is fine.

Best to stick to the maintenance schedule doing 5000 mile oil changes. Especially when you drive short distances.

I am based in UK and AMSOIL doesn't seem that popular, looking at past service record (only had the car less than 2 month ago), 5w-30 has been used in the past 7 years though.

Thank you, I don't know what grade is this bottle of Castrol Edge, how do I tell if it meets Toyota's specification?

The grade is the 5w-30 written on the bottle. Should be the same on the engine oil cap.

I think Amsoil is not super popular because you never see commercials at least hardly ever which in my book is a good sign

Amsoil like Redline are expensive oils. But I use Redline as it has an excellent zddp package in addition to be pure Esther base stock that really helps the solid lifters. The tappet noise reduction is impressive. It's really the only oil you can use that you will notice a difference in engine begavior.
    But it's expensive at $12 a quart.

    Jegs......free shipping.

Google Redline oil. Thousands of posts.

Well expensive oil is really the cheapest oil since you can go so much longer between oil changes

In cars with consumptive use you're always adding oil every month to keep the levels up so I expect you could go even longer upwards of 40 k as long as you drive in a clean air area so the oil filter doesn't get taxed

    1. You can use the oil in the Prius no problem. Feel free to mix it with any other oil that's compatible with the Prius in fact.
    2. A 5000 mile interval is the normal interval for the Prius.
    3. Thinner oil yields better fuel economy. A full synthetic 0W-20 will yield the best fuel economy. I'd follow your user's manual and choose the thinnest grade that it's spec'd for. In the US for the 2nd gens 5W-30 is specified, but I believe for the UK 0W-20 is spec'd, even though it's the same engine (likely due to the differences in weather, and to help avoid liability claims from lazy Americans who don't change their oil often enough). 0W-20 should be great for UK weather, however if you know you're going to be for example driving in Spain in 40C weather, I'd recommend having 5W-30 oil in the car to keep the engine wear down.

But I would be much more concerned about the hybrid battery health not to mention the 12 volt battery healt. Your driving habit does not bode well for either. Life of short infrequent trips does not fully charge either battery and
Also could lead to corrosion of the hybrid battery.

How many times have you had to replace or jump start the 12 volt battery?

Basically any name brand oil is good. I use Mobil 1, Long Life 15,000 oil and I change at 10,000 miles. 2007 with Epps miles.

    LG-TP260 ?

To much fuel dilution for me to go 10,000 miles.

    In the US.

The standard UK OCI is 10,000 mi or 1 Year.

Use any 5W-30 fully synthetic that is API SL (or better) or ILSAC GF-5 (or better). You can also use 0W-20 oil in the UK as it was retrospectively approved for use in the 1NZFXE-NHW20 motor.

Don't try and save money by buying cheap oil. Oil is the life blood of the engine.

Also change the oil filter every oil change. I recommend the OEM filter (part nbr 90915-10003 (PNC 15601)).
