Time to get your head out of your Prius and look around objectively! The Civic is a nice Hybrid design. It gets very close to Prius mileage. Yes, the Prius does better, but only 10% or so. A Prius Touring model would be very close mileage wise to the Civic Hybrid.

The Civic engine is well known as a "good design". The hybrid technology is not up to the standards of the Prius, if that is what you are commenting on. But you said "the engine", not the hybrid system.

As far as commenting on the body design, this is apples to oranges. The Prius is a mid-sized car, the Civic Hybrid is a compact car. Different, eh!

I think they are both good designs.

It seems a great deal cheaper to implement, almost to the level of simply putting on a honkin' starter motor. Of course, I prefer the Prius's revolutionary approach, but as the Honda's evolutionary approach just screams good solid engineering. If the battery cost issue were dealt with, there is no reason that every car couldn't be a mild hybrid like the Civic. That's degree of applicability is a powerful design. The initial killer for me when shopping was the Honda Hybrid's rear seat did not fold down. As this is our big-stuff hauling car, that was just Not OK.

Every car is balance of comprimises in design. Some cars are crap. The Civic hybrid is not one of them. You are calling the car with the second place engine crap?

You're being a little hasty. You list two subjective metrics and then state that they are sufficient to form a fact. Guess what -- you haven't formed a fact. You've only formed an opinion.

You think the Prius is better than the Civic because of two things. There are many other metrics of comparison. For a given person some metrics will be important and some won't. I know quite a few people who think the Civic is a better-looking car than the Prius. Roll my eyes a bit, yeah, but that's their opinion, and I have less of a problem with them than I have with you because, unlike you, they don't confuse facts with opinions.

I would go so far as to assert that you must have some kind of an insecurity problem because you have to go on at length about how something so obviously sucks and something that you picked is so much better. Grow up.

Ouch... that really really hurt. I've seen HCH's clock in at 65mpg for hundreds of miles on the highway. I really gotta baby my Prius to score 65mpg on a pure highway tank.

As for the 0-45 mph in two hours. Sounds good to me. Wish my Prius had a 900cc instead of a 1497cc engine in it. Got too much power as it is. Although, I think the HCH probably has similar power capabilities to the Prius, but having never floored the Prius, I wouldn't know.

I could see the Civic beating the Prius on the highway. A combination of the car weighing a little bit less and the engine being a little bit smaller at 1.3 L. Plus, I've always said that Honda's design played to their expertise in engine technology, while Toyota's design plays to their growing expertise on the electric side of things.

I still think that going forward, Honda's IMA system is going to have a tough time evolving compared to true to goodness full hybrid systems, but Honda's system shows what can be done with current ICEs today. IMA in the Civic is a good system.

The Prius still fits me better, though, as the majority of my driving is non-highway. I think that the engine award was given to the Prius engine with this in mind.

Was there a bad history between you and Honda?

Just the other day, the three bolts inside my left-side mirror were broken by my
slight over-tightening. Dealer told me that I had to buy the whole set (costing $300). Yeah, right!
I could have called Prius "crap" at that moment, but I knew better than that.
I found a way to tighten them up with replacement bolts from Home Depot.

Fact: Last time I check, 0-60mph, HCH is only slightly slower than Prius.
But, if I want to enjoy 0-60mph, I won't find myself in my Prius. I will take my
10 year old BMW 540iA with 4.4L V8, 0-60mph in 5.9sec, instead of 10-11secs.

You're taking an existing opinion of yours and attempting to justify it with little facts that aren't even necessarily facts. If you came here and said "the Prius feels more powerful than the Civic", I would have no problem with it. The Civic gets 48 mpg on the Highway, the Prius gets 53, doing the same speed, same stretch of road. "65 mpg for hundreds of miles" in the Civic is a lie. So no, you're not an idiot, you're a liar. So yes, we should torch you.

If Dan is an idiot, I'm a double idiot! I OWN a 05 Prius, 07 HCHII, and a 00 Insight. The Insight is my favorite hands down for getting the best mileage. I drive it daily to and from work. If I want to haul stuff. I drive the truck. (Prius)

If I want to go for a cruise, I drive the HCH.
