Easier Contest - How far can you go on a penny?

    The other day after driving from one errand to another, I noticed an interesting value on the "See You" display:

    74.2 mgp
    0.4 miles
    2 min
    $0.01

    Somehow I had driven one penny's worth of distance. The car was already warmed up and the weather was mild. The computer was set to a gasoline cost of $3.699 per gallon. I suspect the display would have soon clicked over to $0.02, but I happened to park the car first.

    So for an easier and quicker contest - How far can you go on a penny's worth of gasoline? I'm sure many of you can beat my scant 0.4 miles handily.

    With all due respect, this is not easier, but it is quicker. (I assume you are referencing the ONE gallon 'contest' that I started?).

    What makes it much more difficult is that the difference in mileage from one cent until before one reaches two cents has the potential to be significant. So when the MFD indicates $.01, it might really be $.01999 and therefore clser to $.02. And then there is the cost of gasoline to figure into the equation... not so easy. Mine was $3.269.

    So your contest should really be how far can you go BEFORE you expend a penny. Just sayin'. :)

    None of these "how far can you go" contests are fair. That is because you will return with less charge in the battery. For example I can warm the engine up, stop the car then re-start and drive in EV mode. I'd use very little if any gas but if I use the battery in the contest drive and come home with it very low charge then I am "borrowing" gas from the next time I drive the car when the engine will re-charge the battery.

    The only fair contest would have to require that the battery has EXACTLY the same state of charge before and after the contest drive. And of cource that you drive a close circuit path so that the up hill and down hill balance out

    I agree - it is quicker, but not necessarily easier. I was referencing your ONE gallon contest (which I also assume was suggested for fun).

    That is an even better twist! Then there is an element of chance because it is hard to predict when $0.0099 will turn to $0.0100 with the display limitations.

    Yes. I just couldn't get the camera out in time. Now I know I can turn the car back on and then off the the Trip Summary screen will display again.

    There are so many variables to this little task that it probably isn't possible to make it 'fair'. It is just for fun, but then again, some people can only have fun through criticism rather than joining in. CAlbert could charge up the battery, start with a completely warmed up car on top of the contiental divide, coast down to see what happens, and then post the result to the amusement of all. But someone would point out that it wasn't 'fair'. Heck, I sure would. :)

    Now, to suggest that NONE of these contests are (sic) 'fair', means that no one can have any fun - ever. How about driving a minimum of 700 miles on a tankof gss and posting a picture of your MFD showing your best MPG figure? Then explain in detail how much difference a charged versus discharged battery makes over that distance. Top 20 - MPG Record Holders | PriusChat
