I've read several posts about the desire, or lack thereof, for daytime running lights on the '10; however, I was wondering if anyone has had DRLs installed since purchase? Were they installed by the retailer, or did you DIY? Is it just a matter of a fuse or relay or is a whole wiring harness required? How'd the DIY route go? What's your recommendation as to retailer or self installed? For the sake of expense, I think I'll seriously consider some other installer than my Toyota dealer. Boy! I can barely afford and oil change!!!
The cheapest and simplest way is to turn your headlights on and then just never turn them off. They turn out 30 seconds after the driver door is opened, once the ignition is off. Some folks worry about the 30 second delay before they go out, it is free to have the dealer set them with a Zero second delay once the driver door is opened. (This is how the Gen II works)
Or you can buy a DRL module. Aftermarket ones are readily available. Search online. Then you can decide which lamps you want to use as the DRL ones. For those in the US note that many vehicles use other lamps for DRL (e.g. Chrysler "mini"-van uses the turn signals). Others use a relay system (actually an electronic relay but whatever) and run the headlamps in series. That won't work with HIDs. Not sure about LEDs. Still others switch a resistor in series with the headlamps. It's not a simple "add a fuse" or "add a relay". If you have access to a shop manual you can compare the "Canadian wiring diagram" to the US one. DRLs are supposed to shut off when you apply the park brake.
