Driver leg room

While a lot has been said about the driver's seat (which my 6'0, 31 yo body is ok with including the distance to the pedals) I'm more annoyed with the steering wheel positioning. Having said that my MFD reads 60.3 mpg 275 miles. Hellooooo Dolly

 

While I don't have one yet, I've sat in the driver's seat many times. I'm 6'2", and the leg room is OK, but I would like to bring the front of the seat up more for better support. If you take out the bolts at the front of the seat, and get longer bolts, and use some washers, you should be able to bring the front of the seat up.

 

Yup, i added the washers to the front of my seats as someone noted in a earlier post. However, after my first 5 hour road trip the seat still killed my back.

My biggest complaint is lack of support and a steering wheel that doesn't telescope!

The seats are bolted to the floor with four bolts, so it seems like it wouldn't be that hard to get four steel brackets with same size holes, 2 inches apart. Then you bolt one hole of each bracket to the original floor mounts with original bolts, and use four new bolts, lock washers and nuts to bolt the seat to the four new holes 2 inches further back.

But I think that as the others have said, lack of a telescoping steering wheel would end up being a problem. I am also 5'10", and I cannot put the seat all the way pack or I feel like I am staining to reach the steering wheel.

If anything, I might want the seat a little lower if I could, to see under the top of the winshield better.

Yeah, I just walked out there and checked it again. A telescoping steering wheel would be very nice.

 

I vote for a more comfortable driver's seat also. I'm only 5'0 and made a 100 mile drive recently. Definitely could have used more support for the hamsting/knees. Don't have great knees to begin with and my right knee was very sore and stiff by the end of the drive. I had made the trip many times before in my old car (98 Dodge Intrepid) with no effect on my knee. May try to position a soft pillow next time to see if that helps. This has been the only thing I don't love about my Prius.

I did something like this (moved the seat) on a Subaru I owned about 20 years ago...

Now that I'm older and wiser (well, more fragile anyway), I would wonder what's going to happen to that modified seat if you get hit from the rear. I've seen some scary videos of 'seat failure', where the seat rotates backwards, and ejects the person to the rear of the vehicle. Bad for them and I'd wonder if potentially an insurance issue (illegal safety mod).

I also wonder how it would impact the behaviour of side/front airbags. While we're there, there's sensor wiring on the seats I definitely don't want to touch (and wonder if there's enough slack).

The seats are marginal at best, and the first seats I've owned in a lonnnnngggg time with absolutely no up/down or tilt adjustment. I remember seeing somewhere on PriusChat where they replaced the seats with seats from a 'better' Toyota vehicle. But, call me a scaredy cat, I ain't touching them until I can buy a 'Toyota official replacement'...
