You don't want what the display millage, you want the real millage. When you fill up write the odometer reading on the receipt and save it. Periodically punch the receipts into Excel and calculate the millage.

I simply take pics of the charts showing the costs and the savings vs my previous Gen3 fuel consumption. I could do that in Excel, but too lazy.
For everything else I have my spreadsheet and I rely on tools like Fuelly or Spritmonitor (also available in English). Both tools have iPhone apps.

Moreover, the display is about 5% optimistic.

 

A good question, it would be great if the car could send that data to an app or to the usb port. Even if it is optimistic I find I can get a useful graph of mpg against distance which helps me visualise the effect of cold starts.

 

Maybe someone with an OBD scanner will know whether the information is accessible through the scanner? I don't know what format it would be, if it's formatted at all.

 

Apparently there is an iPhone app called Enginelink that can gather data and can use Torque PIDs. Perhaps its log files have the information.
