    Hi...

On my 2016 Prius both the passenger and drivers side external door handles do not return to their flush position once they are released. To get them flush again is necessary to push on the end until they fully retract. As far as I can see the handles have become slightly warped and so piece of the handle catches on another part of the mechanism.

    Has anyone else experience this?

    Liam

Not that I'm aware of. Get back to your dealer PDQ.

I once had a 2006 BMW 330xi that had this occur on 2 or 3 door handles. It was under warranty and BMW replaced all 4 door handles.

I have never had any issues with either my former '12 or current '17 Prius' door handles.

Keep us posted on what Toyota says/does --

    Hello Liam,
I am having exactly the same problem with both front door handles on my Gen 4 Prius Excel. The problem has slowly got worse over recent months.

I thought a bit of grease or WD40 would cure the problem but as the car is only 18 months old, I decided to let my Toyota dealer do this.
However, after examining the handles, the Service Dept. said the problem is more complex and they need to take the handles apart. This may involve stripping parts of the doors. I have yet to book the car in for the work to be done and I stupidly did not think of asking them if they had tried greasing the handle mechanism.

Have you solved the problem with your door handles?

Welcome to Prius Chart, Michael. @liamr has not been heard from since his original post, so you might want to have a conversation with your service manager about the fault.

Yes, I had this same door handle problem. It seems to happen when we have several days of rain. I spray with a lubricant by holding the handle open and spray back into the mechanism. That works for several months until the right conditions happen again. Next time I should report it to Toyota while still under warranty. Sorry for delay in answering I have had medical issues.

Sounds like a common problem and should be reported the the NHTSA.

Are you sure this would come under the category of Safety Issue?

I have not had any door handle issues with my 2016 Prius, and we had a few icy days and even more rainy days this winter.

Yeah, while others suggest this is not a one-off fault, it needs to be reported back up through the Toyota supply chain.

That's right, but they might just be interested that it's happened a couple of times. Even if that's just on Prius Chat!

Mine did it yesterday when we had the hot weather, both front door handles. It seems that the handle is expanding and getting slightly longer and catching on the lock barrel. Pushing the handle forward let it close fully. It's not done it since but I'll keep an eye on it and if it does it again I'll get it to the dealer (or I might just trim some plastic off the front of the lock barrel hole with a hobby knife).

Not hot by your standards, 26 deg C and just before the hot days we had a week or more of persistent rain too so high humidity.

It has been very wet around here and I think temperatures were higher earlier this week. I have had higher temperatures and no issue with my Prius.

Hmmm - I guess mine will only do it on the driver's door - no lock barrel on the passenger side. We've had cooler weather - with maximums about 26C o_O. That's getting to what I like. Any hotter and the a/c goes on, because it's usually accompanied with high humidity.
