Does the old fob need to be FULLY functional to make a new one?

    Back Story: 2005 Prius sat in my driveway for months while I saved for new hybrid battery. Obviously 12v died in this time period (but has since been replaced 300 miles ago and is up and running)

    The Question: I was looking at those videos on how to program a new Keyfob yourself, but that will only work if your current Keyfob is fully functional correct? Mine (silver logo, 2005) won't unlock the doors anymore, and won't start the car unless it's directly inserted into the key slot. There is no flashing key light in the dash anymore while the car is off now, either. This started when the original 12v died.

    Assuming this likely means programming my own new Keyfob wouldn't work and I'd need a locksmith? I'm disabled so I'm trying to find the cheapest options first :/

    (Battery in old fob has already been changed; it's not a fob battery issue. Also already checked the smart key button below the steering wheel)

    Is the button under the steering wheel pushed in that would disable SKS functions just curious when you say the fob buttons don't unlock the door. But since you have SKS you don't need the file buttons to unlock the door You just reach your hand to the lever and the door unlocked still correct? That means your remote is being sensed by the car in your pocket and the sensors are doing their jobs so everything basically is working you just can't get the buttons on the fob to unlock and lock the door does it still work the panic button? These are kind of important things. If all SKS functions are working and it's just the unlock and lock buttons then I think your system is working enough to possibly do the chicken dance to program another fob and then you might even be able to do another one and then delete in Toyota software. The fob that you use to program these two since it's broken and then throw it away Make a copy of the key that works your door or two and put them in the new remotes It can buy cases for the style remote we have with blank keys and all of that for like $6 a piece and they work just fine I have like nine of them the fob cases that is from different manufacturers and companies having had a problem with any of them.

    No the fob doesn't work for anything aside from starting the car when it's in the slot. The buttons don't work (aside from lighting up the little red light on the fob), and the doors will not unlock without using the physical key inside the fob. The panic button does not work either. Also the light that used to blink in the dash while the car was off, no longer blinks

    The smart key button is pushed out, because it's enabled, not pushed in

    And this exact remote used to work for you personally not someone telling you so?? .

    Yes, it's my remote, always been my remote lol. The lock/unlock buttons used to work. The panic button used to work. The smart key capabilities used to work. There used to be the flashing light on the dash. None of it works since the 12v died, aside from turning the car on when it's directly in the key slot

    Yes, on a SKS Gen2 Prius, you need one fully functional fob in order to add another one.

    IDK if you can just go through part of the process in order to have a second "dash slot only" fob.

    If your current fob can't be fixed (maybe a broken electronic part or solder joint?), then you need a locksmith or dealer for an "all keys lost" scenario.

    Also might want to use a fully capable scantool to check all systems on the car - make sure that your problem is the fob.
