Does the base model MFD have a video feed?

    I have a 2007 base model and my wife wanted a reversing camera added. So we got one, but the screen for the camera is a small screen attched to the rear view mirror. The extra weight causes the whole mirror to shake when driving over anything other than perfectly smooth surfaces.

    I have been back to the dealer, and to the auto electrical shop they used to fit the camera, but nobody has any good suggestions on how to stop the shaking.

    So I started to think laterally. I know that the I-tech version of the MFD has the video feed, but a lot of that screen is tied up with the whole JBL stero unit and the GPS. But does the base model have a video feed?

    I have been doing a search through the Prius Chat forums but so far cannot see any answer to this question. All the results I see involve the JBL unit.

    Can anybody help?

    I'll stay at the start that I know very little about this. The only reason I'm posting at all is that I've seen your question go unanswered for a week.

    I was thinking that perhaps something like this would help? Coastal ETech Lockpick

    I really don't know if that unit is compatible with your non-navigation MFD, but the unit does a lot of things and one of them is it gives you additional video inputs. I was thinking you could use that input to attach the aftermarket backup camera to. As far as if it will work for your MFD or not, perhaps the retailer could answer that, or someone else on PC now that I've hopefully opened this can of worms!

    Very good question..... You can easily tap a video feed into it but I don't know if the car has it already.

    Maybe it would be better to get a rear-view mirror with a tiny screen built into the glass?

    Sean, thanks for the suggestion. I had got that suggestion from another site, but when I checked, it is all tied up with the JBL system, as most of the lockpick is designed to enhance the NAV as well as other functions.

    I was hoping that there was someone out there in PC land who had access to wiring diagrams for the non-NAV MFD and could see whether there was even an input feed available, but it looks like I am out of luck. :(

    Vagabond, this is just what I have, the screen is built into a complete rear view mirror which then clips onto the standard mirror. But it appears to be just too heavy for the whole assembly.

    All these camera in mirror units, as I have been told by the shop that put it in for me, effectively clip or strap onto the existing mirror. This then means that you can, in theory, take the unit out at a later date and still leave the car roadworthy with a valid rear view mirror.

    By the way, the actual image on the camera is nowhere near as good as what you see in the blurbs, and I have found that it is almost invisible when out in daylight. It is very much a low light tool, especially in undercover parking areas where I find it most useful.

    I had looked at the Coastal Lockpick, but all the writeup seems to indicate that it only works with the JBL system. From what I can gather, the JBL system is the minimum standard in the US, and they offer the different functions, such as nav and bluetooth, as options. In Australia, we have two Prius models, the iTech, which has the JBL system and all options, and a base model, which has a single CD player, and a much more basic MFD. The JBL MFD has 7 buttons around the screen, whereas mine only has 4 buttons.
    I have e-mailed Coastal seeking clarification, so I will let you know when I get a reply.
    If Coastal will work with my basic unit, I can arrange to have the lockpick shipped to a US address, and can pick it up myself - I will be in the US end of September, but I need to be comfortable that the lockpick will work in my model before I commit myself.

    Well I am a sucker for new challenges and although I dont really care much for a cam on my rear :) sorry if it was a corny joke... but well I will take a gander beneath my dashboard once I get home... Lets see if I can contribute to this community a bit... Will post again with new information....

    So took apart my dash .. it was fun .. and interestingly enough all I needed what a 10mm socket wrench .. funny thing .. the dash almost came completely off buy me simply applying some good pressure to the top of the vent covers and click .. it came right off ... so much for the whole screw driver thing .. you all talk about so much .. anyways ... i got some good pics off of it but wanted to know if there has been anyone out there who has a prius with opts that have taken their dashes apart and taken some pics of it .. I would love to compare pics.. and see what exactly is the difference .. in the wiring ...
