    According to a recent study cited by the Wall Street Journal, drivers of BMWs and Prius Hybrids cheat at stop signs.

    Quote, "Drivers of BMWs and other high-status cars (including Prius hybrids) were also more likely to cheat at four-way-stop intersections, according to the research."

    I have to admit, if there is no traffic, why come to a complete stop and decrease your fuel mileage.

    It's also interesting that the Prius is elevated to a high-status car in the article.

    No, I always come to a complete stop. Even when making a right turn on red.

    ...maybe what they are saying, 4-way stops require courtesy to go by first-come, first-served basis,
    but some drivers seem to feel:

    Rationale (not good ones) for going out-of-turn on 4-way stops
    > If someone is going straight thru and you are turning, they like to go first ahead of you
    > If you go to stop fully, then some will roll-thru ahead of you
    > If they got there "before" you, but they are stopped behind one or two cars, and you got there later but you are first in line, then they feel you should yield to them even if you were stopped first (is this clear?)

    There is a 4-way stop (signs) about a quarter mile from my house. I go through it an average of 4-5 times a day.

    The worst "cheaters" are young to middle aged mothers with cell phones in their ears. Every day. Every day!

    I rarely see any driver ever stop at any stop sign, and especially at a red light when turning right - and I know why. If you stop, you're actually going to have to wait on someone else. In driving, as well as almost any other everyday practice, we've cast manners to the wind. No one cares about being decent anymore. (sorry about the rant!)

    I must note that this study:
    * took place at only one crosswalk and one 4-way stop in Berkeley, hardly representative of the whole country;
    * had a small total sample size, so the the sample sizes for each make or model had to have been much lower, leading to a hideously wide variance or standard deviation or confidence interval.

    Long ago I lived near a busy 4-way stop with 2 lanes entering from each direction. Most regular commuters learned that when traffic was heavy enough to back up in most directions, a different set of rules allowed much greater throughput:

    * All lanes on opposing sides (i.e. up to 4 cars) go simultaneously, north-south alternating with east-west.
    * First-come-first-served doesn't apply any more, any car arriving in an empty lane should step into the existing timing pattern already established by the occupied lanes;
    * Cars traveling straight go through first, those making left turns do so immediately behind the straight cars;
    * The alternate side must allow the slightly delayed left turning cars to complete their crossing.

    Not everyone obeyed or was regular enough to know these rules, so there were frequent hiccups. But the regulars usually had the efficient high-throughput pattern re-established fairly quickly.

    I am really surprised by this article. I am not about the BMW driver stereotype because I swear, I don't care what part of the country you are in, you get into a BMW and you throw out all common courtesy and rules of the road. Not sure what makes the car so special to allow that, but I have also witnessed more accidents from drivers in BMW's than any other car. As far as Prius drivers, before I had one, I never even thought that they were horrible. The cars have never been impressive looking, but I never thought of them as rude. I would not consider myself to be rude either, and I do come to a complete stop at all stop lights and stop signs. I don't get in the fast lane with the Prius except to pass, and I may drive under the speed limit sometimes, but it is always in the slow lane. Nothing irks me more than those who pass on the right. So, maybe I piss off those people who expect to go fast in the slow lane.

    Same. I also turn into my lane which seems to be a cardinal sin around here.
