do all your Prius makes engine noise when starts??

Can you record it and put somewhere? I don't hear any annoing sounds from my engine. I can only barely hear inverter noise.

 

The only sounds I hear in my quiet garage at cold startup are charging of the brake system when I open the door, beep when ready after hitting the start button, and the ICE starting about 14 seconds after hitting the start button.

 

I always wondered what that sound was when you open the door (after the car has sit awhile.) Does it matter if you start the car while the is running?

 

Not at all. The brakes charge up independently from what the rest of the car is doing.

We are a 3 Gen 3 Prius family and have never experienced the loud ICE start-up rattle that some have described. Perhaps it only occurs in cold climates (we're in warm So. California ).

 

I get the crazy rattling/shaking once in awhile if the car sits a couple days and its cool out. Starts when the ICE is firing up and lasts a few seconds until all is smooth. I have stumbled in this topic somewhere on here but cannot remember where and I don't worry about it too much as this car has sooo many idiosyncracies compared to others.

 

My driveway is pretty long, so when I back out the car starts off with the traction motor initially. By the time I am at the street the ICE starts up and yeah, the gas engine starts up. And yeah, you can hear it! Then when I commence to travel forward the ICE becomes less apparent. If, in fact, this is what you are trying to describe, yes, it's normal.

 

I have had three of these cars, various generations and they all make some strange noises at times from the various inverter sounds, coolant pumps, Gen III fake sound made when moving very slow, etc. I pretty much ignore all sounds unless I get a warning light or something sounds like it is breaking or broken.

 

My new 2013 Persona makes an electrical whine every time I open my driver's side door. Not sure what that's about.

 

Sounds like the brake system getting ready to be used.

Maybe I'm taking an unwise approach. But I get that sound when I open the drivers door, I assumed it was the Brake Actuator pumping up the brakes? I could be wrong.

But generally I just assumed it was "something hybrid" happening.

I've noticed a few whirs and clicks from time to time I can't exactly pin down but I simply haven't worried about them. As long as they "sound" like something that is falling under "normal" operating conditions?

Part of this acceptance is even with a few extra "Hybrid" sounds, I still find The Prius to be one of the quietest automobiles I have ever owned.

With every other ICE vehicle I have ever owned, you could take some pride in how quiet the ICE sounded at stop lights or stop signs...as in " The engine is so quiet, it sounds like it's not running".....usually this affect would deteriate the longer I owned the vehicle.

The Prius is the first and only vehicle I've owned that once warmed up? Really DOES shut down at stops and stop lights. And of course, it's the only vehicle I've owned that is capable of motivation without running the ICE. Top that off with the ECVT transmission and an engine that is designed to run as efficiently as possible as much as possible, and overall The Toyota Prius in operation is one of the quietest vehicles I have ever owned.

So when I enter, or after I stop-turn off the vehicle to exit, if I notice any weird clicks or whirs, I've pretty much just been ignoring them. Perhaps there is some danger in making the assumption that all the sounds are simply part of a Hybrid being a Hybrid, but at this point I haven't heard anything that sounds "detrimental".

 

When I first start and back out of the garage always a mild sound. I'm told its the
Traction battery. Sound goes away once I put it in drive

 

Thats the ICE start up. It's normal. Not only can you hear, but you can feel the "rumble" as well...well it's not really a rumble, but after driving the Prius, any engine vibration is a "rumble."

 

Did you ever find what was causing this? I get this every time i start my car. Just bought a used 2012 prius 4 at 4800 miles

 

it's the alien sound machine so you won't hit an unaware's pedestrian while in stealth mode.
