DIY replace ac compressor?

I've had a friend work on his A/C system before. He first had the shop pump out the refridgerant and oil. Then we worked on replacing what was leaking - the dryer assembly.

If you don't know what's leaking You'd need a mechanic add the special die first. Make sure it's compatible with the Prius's compressor oil. From what I read on here a completely new system would cost thousands in time and money.

 

To get to the compressor and replace it, does the dash need to be removed?

My dealer has told me that it willtake at least 12 hours in labour to replace the compressor.

Thoughts?

 

The compressor isn't located in the dash.

Any chance the dealer could have been talking about the evaporator?

No offense, but if you're not sure where the compressor is, I'd at least call the dealership and get an assessment and quote.

I wouldn't take this on myself, it requires specialized equipment, Repair Manual info.

 

Apparently the dash has to be removed to replace the TX valve? 12 hours just seems excessive to me? But that’s just my opinion.
