DIY Cabin Filter Replacement - Anyone do this?

So far, I've only used the standard filters, though others have used furnace filters cut to size, and reported good results. Whatever filter you use, it will last longer and be more effective with regular cleanings. Usually every time I wash the car, I pull the filter out and vacuum it off, and if it looks dirty, I'll wash it, too.

 

What is the standard filter on the 2010 Prius?

 

The Gen III cabin filters are sold here for $20 each plus shipping http://www.metrotpn.com/ProductDetails.aspx?CollectionID=25&ProductID=133&SortIndex=24 although the maintenance manual recommends blowing them out with an air compressor when they're dirty, so I don't intend to replace mine for a while.

For anyone who hasn't done it before, DIY replacement or cleaning is a piece of cake. Just pop out the glove compartment (see manual) and slide the filter out. I pulled mine out a couple of days ago to check it and noted it has an integrated frame rather than a separate tray like the Gen II filter does. I haven't found any after market replacements for the Gen III filter yet.

Question - on non-Solar Prius', is the A/C filter behind the glove box that you describe above the same thing as the Cabin Filter?

I have had other cars where the Cabin Filter is located in the engine compartment under the wipers.

The Maintenance Manual refers to Cabine Filter but the Owner's Manual only list the A/C filter and the engine filter.

Had mine out the other day
took it to the kitchen sink after knocking off the debris
washed it by hand with dish soap
put it back in it's place
car runs easier when it's clean

Anybody do any kind of charcoal filter replacement/supplement?

Exactly how is it replaced? I only see videos posted for the Gen II Prius.

Is it exactly the same as this or are there different instructions to access the filter?

 

There are instructions in the owners manual. It takes less than 5 minutes, and is very easy.

 

I found the replacement filter on Amazon for about $9 with free 2-day shipping for Amazon Prime members. I'll try installing it on Wednesday.

I just had 20K mile service yesterday for about $90 and the dealer said the cabin filter needed changing and they would do it for an extra $57. I thought it was way too high of a price especially since the had already removed it to inspect it and it would not have been more than a few minutes extra labor to open a package and install a new one than to reinstall the old one. Even if they had said $35, I might have just had them do it right then for convenience, but they got too greedy.

 

Is Gen 3's cabin air filter the same as Gen 2?

 

I just took the filter off just to make sure I would be able to replace it when the new filter came in and I noticed the was a foreign object like a pebble stick it in. I'm surprised that the tech didn't even knock it off the filter before putting back in.
Then when I tried to put the glove box door back on the damper fell off and I can't see where it went because it's dark now. I'm not sure I would be able to reach where it fell behind that area anyway. I wonder if I should order a new damper and just leave it where it fell or I might have to go back to the dealer and pay for them to fish it out so it doesn't rattle around. I'm surprised the damper was so easy to knock off the pin.
The dealer overfilled the oil during the service visit, so I will have to go back to them anyway unless I siphon out the excess myself.

 

If you're referring to a GenIII, access is the same, but it doesn't have a tray.The filter just slides into a slot behind a door.

Oops, never mind.

 

From the video, GenII drops into a tray, GenIII has a built-in frame and doesn't use the tray.

 

I was able to find the pin by reaching around behind the glove box. I thought it was just a small pin the would be very difficult to find, but it has a large base to it that prevented from falling very far. I just don't know how to reattach it now.
Also the large trim piece below the glove box is off and I can see how to attach the front with 3 clips, but I can't see where and how the rear attaches.

 

I also saw that there is only 1 damper on the Gen III on the right side and the Gen II video was showing dampers on both the left and right side.
I am having some reassembly problems now that I listed in another post.

 

Yes, Fram Fresh Breeze CF10285 for $19 from any Walmart Super Center. It is a charcoal cabin air filter that is advertised to be good for 15k.

 

Does anyone know how to reattach the glove box damper when it falls off? I can't tell where the back of it connects.
Issues like this are why I was hoping there was a video of photos of someone changing a Gen III's cabin filter. There are several videos of this procedure on Youtube for the Gen 2 models, but there are some small differences in how it's done on a Gen 3.

 

I dropped my damper too. I don't remember exactly where it connected but it was obvious when I looked with a good flashlight
