Discounted Extended Warranty

I got the Toyota Platinum warranty for $1000 when I bought my Prius C (used, 16,000 miles) this summer. Dealer initially said it was $2000 but was giving me a memorial day special price of $1600. When I said I wasn't interested, he said he would give it to me for "his cost" of $1000. Shop around to a few different dealers and see what they can offer you.

Check the info at Toyota Financial Services web site. Yes, it can be bought after the purchase.

There is no such thing as an extended warranty. It is a prepaid repair contract. Toyota calls theirs a vehicle service agreement; they do not use the word warranty. It covers what it says in the contract only if you fulfill the requirements the contract places on you.

This is really peace-of-mind insurance. It is very unlikely that you will get your money out of it. Most buyers don't. These products are a product the dealership sells like any other product, except there is no inventory cost. They can price them as they wish. The price has enough money in it for a commission for the so-called finance manager (who gets paid only on commission of what he sells), margin for the dealership, profit for the underwriter, and something left to pay for repairs.

So--if it helps you sleep better at night, buy it. Otherwise...probably not.

Do you know who the underwriter for the policy is? It is important.

In years past, I would get an extended warranty through Autoland at my credit union (for around $600-$800 at the time, the same policy is about $1050 now) but this time, after doing some research, refused to -- for the underwriter is a sleaze of a company called Interstate/National Dealer Services, who not only was fined by the FCC for their constant "Auto Warranty" robocalls, but pretty much uses loopholes to refuse to pay valid claims (have a look). The Toyota dealership's price was totally not worth it ($4000-$2500). Even at $900 or $1000 I don't think an extended warranty is worth it on a well-built car, but if I could get a real warranty from Toyota (not a loophole filled one) I would possibly consider it.

However for my last two cars (both Hondas) I never once had to use them, and the Prime seems very well built. I think I'll probably just pass this time. Seems to be a pretty shady industry.

I know that for many of them, they are full of loopholes, such as you must show proof of maintenance exactly as outline in the owners guide (oil changes at certified location, dated and sealed) even if you're trying to get a warranty claim on something nothing to do with that (like a power window not rolling down), otherwise, it'll be denied. Just too much shadiness.

Steve makes a good point about the underwriter. Even worse is if the 3rd party underwriter goes out of business.

If you really want the extended service contract, stick with the one from the manufacturer. Some dealerships will sell the 3rd party contracts--more profit for them. First look at the Toyota Financial Services web site for their VSA vehicle service agreements. Decide which one you want. Search on line for any dealership that sells the VSA you want at the best price.

These things are a great profit item for the dealership. There is no inventory to carry. No expense to them at all. The so-called Finance Manager isn't salaried, he's commission only, so it's his time and effort to sell these so he gets a paycheck. Whatever they can sell it for over the cost from the underwriter is pure gravy to the dealership and the finance guy.

 

I think you have to go through a Toyota dealer. I checked the Toyota Financial Services website, and there was no information on warranty there. Some dealers give good deals on the extended warranty, many want to change list price for it.

We recently purchased a 2017 Prius Prime Premium from our local dealership here in Western Virginia. The one drawback was that this dealership does not offer the Toyota Extra Care Platinum VSA rather a 3rd party extended warranty. After a while of the finance person trying to reassure us that the company was reputable and been around for over 25 years, we still said no. We wanted to get the Toyota VSA, a reputable company that has been around 79 years. After going thru many posts on several of the main Toyota forums, I was lead to believe in recent posts that you would have to buy a Toyota VSA in person, at a dealership in the state you reside and purchased the car in. That a few years ago, a lot of people on the forums were getting their VSAs from one of two particular individuals. If you’ve been looking for a good deal on the Toyota VSA, then you’ve probably read the same posts we have and know who we are talking about. We contacted dealers in our area, as well as some areas of the country that my husband will be traveling to soon. The quotes started coming in and the prices we were receiving were in the ball park of the rates our local dealer quoted for the third party extended warranty. Some were surprisingly more. My husband decided it might be worth it to try contacting one of the 2 people that the Toyota posters had recommended, just to see if he might work with us, even though we are in Virginia and he is in the MIDWEST. We had a pleasant experience with each dealer and perhaps if they had been as forthcoming with the price we received from the MIDWEST, they would have had our business. Needless to say, we have the genuine Toyota VSA that we wanted and had such an easy time with our friend in the MIDWEST! We can’t thank him enough for all his help! So the moral of the story - DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Read the posts on Toyota forums and sometimes, reach out to people even if the posts say that those people can not help you anymore.

 

The dealership certainly can offer the VSA (any Toyota dealership can do business with Toyota Financial) but the 3rd party extended service contract gives him a higher profit margin, so they lie about the VSA. Avoid these for all the reasons Steve listed above. I think the only boundaries for any extended service contract are national--If you're in the U.S. it has to be from a U.S. dealer, not Canada, for example.
