Disabling the Reverse Sound Effect

    For the Prius Prime (Premium or Advanced) does anyone know how to shut off the loud reverse beeping SFX? I knew how to do it on the old Prius models, but this is proving to be a bit of a mystery on the Prius Prime.

    Any info would be outstanding!

    Yeah...it's in the owner's manual. Your dealer has to do it.

    The Prime isn't a separate model; it is officially the Prius Prime. Like the physical architecture, much of the software will be shared between the two.

    The reverse sound that the much superior Prime makes is, as one would expect, a much more refined auditory experience than that of the standard liftback. Many reviewers would linger in reverse just to bask in the piece of mind the dulcet tone engenders.

    At your 5,000 mile servicing ask the service tech to turn off the reverse beeps. That was what I did with my Prius gen3.

    I just went to my local dealer this morning and the service writer went inside, he went and got this computer gizmo, plugged it in, pressed a few keys on the keyboard and it was done! Less than five minutes. Funny thing though, now when I start it up, the computer says on my screen, "Its Prime Time".................................? (kidding)

    I agree with all of the above posts. The dealer has to turn off the reverse beep. There are some customizations that you can change and others that must be changed by the dealer. They should not charge you by the way for performing this service.

    10,000 mile or 1-year for the prime. With our usual driving, the engine hasn't run yet except for the trip home from the dealership and when I experiment by mashing various buttons.

    The manual says there is an external sound when running below (I think) 15 mph. Not mine. Just the sound of some fans & pumps.

    You probably have to have the windows down to hear the sound. It's outside only, unlike the reverse beep, which was/is inside only.

    Meh, why not?

    I actually kind of agree: well think maybe they should charge Toyota. But: they're paying for the real estate they're sitting on, business license, salaries, training, equipment, many investments. And you roll in, tie up a service writer and a mechanic? You should pay a nominal fee.

    Personally, I don't mind the beep at all, but that's another story. The main thing: I think it's poor engineering, a bandage fix for the return-to-center shifter. But I manage to back out of my garage and onto the road with the beep. Life goes on.

    I don't get the whole go to the dealer thing. Unless you have a Toyota dealer across the street from you and the free time to wait around for them to tell you they will or will not do it for free.....nope. Not for me. I'd rather spend the few bucks and do it myself. And then do it again, myself, should I ever need to change or disconnect the battery.

    If you have a jump pack with 12 volt automotive outlet (cigarette lighter socket), maybe look into memory saver cables. They have the automotive plug at one end and a OBD plug (with just the power pins) at the other end. Plus lights to confirm your connection is good.

    I appreciate sometimes you do want the battery completely disconnected, no power, say when doing the brakes, for safety. But the above is handy for battery swaps, supplies a bit of power to retain memories.

    I could use one for my head, lol.

    Funny, the jump pack you link is the one I have. You also need a memory saver cord. I believe I've actually got both of these (keep buying stuff for my son, then he says "you hang onto it"):

    (Both of the above only have one indicator light. Works fine: connect just one end, then just the other end. If the light goes on for both connections, you know they're both solid. There is also a higher end one that has indicator light for both ends, I think.)

    I'm assuming that this is only for the carista type settings and not things like radio presets etc?

    Basically anything that would be lost by disconnecting the battery, won't get lost.

    I connect it at the "boost point". Not sure if the GIV has that. Of course you could just connect it to the cable at the battery, then remove the cable from the battery. You have to be careful naturally, but I'd be worried with the memory saver feeding back to the battery post if you accidentally shorted it. It would go through some expensive electronics.

    David, you could describe in more layman terms? Making a circuit between the negative battery post and something? I'm just not clear.
