Dimmable Dome light in Prius with 1 Watt Xenon White high powered LED

Are the new lamps much whiter and brighter? It's hard to tell in a video shot with auto-aperture and auto-whitebalance. Where did you get them?

 

Looks like warden_jp2002 is a seller of LEDs on eBay, but I didn't see a link for this one. Looks very nice. I've seen some LED replacements at Pep Boys, but not for this.

 

usb, are you going to investigate new LEDs for the steering wheel?

After some looking around at the seller, I found these LEDs 1W high power Led Xenon for $8.30. I am thinking they might be it, but says only 2 available.

Could these be used for the rest of the lights (hatch area, backseat light, and vanity lights)? If so, I might have try and replace all of them. I wanted to get Darrell's but couldn't swing the price (rather couldn't convince the wife about the price).

EDIT: Found several others with varying amounts availabe 1, 2, or 3. All are buy it now. There are different 1w's too: refractor, wide angle, flank, fog, which are $8.30 or less. I don't understand, what does all this mean?

 

LEDs are brigth but very directional. So they make them in different type to try and make it work for a whole host of applications. The flank is one that mounts the LEDs at a 90 degree angle, refractor makes the light shine 180 degrees, but is still not as bright as a regular blub, wide angle is similar but has more LEDs mounted firing sideways to emulate a regular bulb. You have to know what application you're using so you know what type LED you'll need.

I am trying to decide between the regular LED and the refractor. It says the refractor has four leds pointing to the side, so I think those are probably not going to be good for the dome lights. (ie one side would go in all directions and might be hard to have on while driving, plus not as much light would go down). It's hard to tell from the seller pics.

I went with the 1w , the 12 LED Wide Angle for the dome center, and the 31mm white festoon for the cargo (I wanted to make sure it fit and it was a $1 cheaper). After shipping it was $20.80 for all 5 bulbs. Guess I will have an extra wide angle, although maybe I can put in the dome center and 1 in the back dome.

BTW, I found these at 7 color 44m Festoon LEDS at another seller for 5.49 francs (I am not sure which francs, but it is in Ireland). The description says the colors gradually fade from one color to next. Not sure if that is what you are looking for.

Definitely look brighter than stock. I'm no expert on how to get a better color in the pics.

 

I really want to do this, but I took my lamps out and measured them:

dome is DE3175 and is 31mm

cargo is DE3022 and is 28 mm

vanity lights are also DE3022, 28mm

3mm is about 1/8"

So my question is, do the 31mm lamps fit in the cargo and vanity lights? Did you get flank festoons? Did that 42mm festoon fit anywhere?

Well, I have some (I buy just about every LED product that comes out - you should see my collection!). For the price you don't have much to lose. They are reasonably bright, and when they point in the correct direction, they provide enough light for the task. There is precious little heat sink, and zero regulation (which is why they dim, of course). If you're lucky, they'll last long enough to make it worth your while. While they're working, you get good bang for your buck. I just haven't had much luck in keeping them working.

I suppose the obvious comparison would be to the modules that I was making. These draw about 20% more power and produce about 50% less light. The energy is thrown away as heat in the dropping resistor. They'll get plenty hot. I don't even want to know what the junction temp is! But hell, I can barely buy the raw LEDs for the price of these complete units.
