    hi all

I was foolish enough to not drive in my prius to the dealer to get oil changed at 5000 miles. I took at in @ 7600 miles ( i drive a lot due to my job)

does that automatically void my car's warranty?

    thanks

Yep you're done. Nothing left to do now but to sell it.

Seriously though....no it doesn't void the warranty unless Toyota can prove you have oil related engine damage due to the additional 1500 miles. I guarantee your oil can go more miles than that and not hurt the engine. And even further still if you use synthetic oil. You don't even have to get the oil changed by a Toyota dealership or any dealership.....you can do it yourself and keep your warranty good.

And of course, even if it had done damage (and it probably couldn't if only done one time, even with dino oil), only the engine would be out of warrantee, nothing else.

One thing I should point out is that an engine is pretty tough and even if you went 10,000 miles on dino oil it wouldn't hurt it. Sure the oil would be dirty but it still wouldn't hurt the engine doing this once.

Hi Ryan, as your engine oil has now been changed, I would recommend that you take a sample of the current batch when it is due to be changed and have that analyzed. The procedure is relatively simple and will cost you an additional $20.

In all likelihood the results of that analysis will show that your Prius engine is in fine shape. Then you can go back to enjoying it and put this minor incident out of your mind.

Going 1600 miles over the recommended change time will NOT result in engine damage nor does it need an oil analysis.

    Relex, Ryan.
Just follow the schedule from now on.
We are not talking about 20K miles w/o oil change here.

With my '98 BMW, if I had strictly followed the computer, the first scheduled oil change was due at 14K miles.
No kidding. Not synthetic either. Of course, I love my BMW more than THAT. <_<

Sell it? After running the oil that long? Good luck with that!

Out of the generocity of my heart, I'll haul it away for free. It won't cost you a dime to get that oil-burning, out-of-warranty Prius off your hands.

    What do you say? B)

    ryan,

Tony is giving you a GREAT deal there, and I suggest you take him up on it right away. He might change his mind and not want to do you the favor if you don't hurry.

(Tony, when he gives you the car and you sell it, I want a cut).

Granted, he is. But there are many others of us here willing to make the same offer. Great sacrifice though it is.

There is no "Doubt" about it. Running 1600 miles past with regards to oil changes does not damage the engine nor does it void the warranty. This is a non issue!

Now if you do this all the time it could shorten the life of the engine and Toyota could possibly challenge a warranty claim down the road. But going over the mileage limit once in a while is no big deal.

Remember there is also a time portion to oil changes with the warranty. I have rarely follow it, I only use the mileage and once a year (for limited use vehicles). I've had one engine malfunction due to oil starvation over the years and the manufacure replaced the engine under the warranty. Even after receiving my hand written owner record of doing oil changes myself.

just wanted to join in the discussion on oil changes. First off the M.F. act protects you if you use synthetic oil or different(longer) oil changes. As far as usability of synthetic oil I have ASTM tests comparing oils in key relevent areas. THe areas would be friction (4 ball wear test), volatility (how fast it evaporates when it is hot). In europe oil changes for the same engines are 10,000mi. Using the correct oil you can do that and improve your gas mileage and decrease wear on your engine. [attachmentid=6648]

I would agree with this, just incase when the engine does need work done(not necessarily because he missed this oil change but later downt he road) and toyota wants to challenge him, he has proof that the car was fine at the time. just a little CYA. you never know, they might want to prorate the repairs or something based on this oil change.

And I know waiting this long to change the oil is no problem at all. just dont do it all the time or ever again. Just bad pratice.

Say what? You work instead of posting and reading on PriusChat? Hmm, I'll have to explore that option...

I've been debating the time for the next oil change myself. It's been 6 months since my last change, so the Mainenance Required light just started flashing on the dashboard when I first start up. Thing is, I've only gone 4,000 miles, so I'm inclined to push it off a month.

I'm convinced that there are people here that live on PriusChat. Some with over 10,000 posts in a years.

Yeah, I'm beginning to doubt the sincerity of this new Prius Owner......... he neglects his vehicle by not following recommended maintenance oil changes, and now we find out he's got a job and can't pay 100% attention to his Prius and keep current with the posts here on PC........... Hhhhmmmmmm B) B)
