Looking into getting a 2007 Prius pretty soon. I'm located in SoCal (San Diego) and just curious if the Prius sales are still going so strong that dealerships won't be willing to negotiate much with prices. I know the standard answer is it never hurts to try, but if anyone else has purchased one in the last couple months, maybe you can share your experience. Or are sales slowing just a bit (with the dip in gas prices, except for here in SoCal) so that dealerships now have a stock of vehicles that they are trying to get rid of... I'm looking at either Package #5 or 6. Thanks for your help.

Sales have slowed way down for a PRIUS, dealers have them in stock, you should easily be able to get $1500 off the MSRP. Thats what I would go for because you lost half your tax credit already and the $1500 of will make up for it.

Thanks... just got an offer for almost $3,000 off MSRP from a local dealership... might go back and talk to them more about it.

Great! The market for the PRIUS has slowed down more than I though. One year ago dealers were charging a $3000 premium above the MSRP. We will have to see what happens if the gas prices go back up another dollar.

I don't have a Prius yet, but probably have the world's worst case of Prius Envy.... Anyway, I've been watching the Prius market like a hawk. In the last several months the Prius market has changed a lot. 4 months ago, it was difficult finding immediately what you wanted in terms of options. Since Sept. the following have changed:

    1) Federal income tax credit has been reduced.
    2) Gasoline prices have stabilized.
    3) Toyota has increased Prius production.
    4) Demand for the Prius has declined somewhat.
    5) Many dealers here in Ca. have plenty to choose from.
    6) The market has changed from a seller's market to a buyer's market.

If you are seriously in the market for a Prius, NEGOTIATE!

Remember, you never get the deal you deserve, you get the deal you negotiate...

    Good Luck,

    Keith

e-mail the Internet Sales Manager. If you haven't "talked" to this person you probably aren't getting the lowest price.

Good analysis, and I might add one more to this:

I have a friend waiting to see what the 08 or 09 Prius will do...he says he's read that it might get 80 mpg, and he's willing to wait and see.

I got $2,000 off MSRP, on 12/31. The salesman said they would continue to "wheel and deal" into the new year, not just with Toyotathon.

And for the next two years he'll be spending how much more on gasoline?

Using his logic, shouldn't he just wait till, say, 2020, when something even better might come along?

Prices going down, but some of the other economic factors offset that. Perhaps the bigger discounts offset the loss of the tax credit and the LOSS OF THE HYBRID HOV carpool lane stickers (in California at least). I got $1000 off and was happy. $3000 is fantastic!!!

Hey there are 10,000 more HOV lane sticker available as of 2007. I would check with the DMV before giving up. Also I am looking to buy in the SD area within the next couple of weeks Here is what I have found so far from MOST dealerships in the area.
There are only 3 packages available #2, #5 and #6

I am a little upset about that since I really wanted #3 because is considerably less and had all the options I want. But oh well.

    Anyways here is the info:

Every dealer I have emailed has responded with the MSRP prices

    package # 2 $24,169-$24,758

    package # 5 - $28074

a few have gone a couple of thousand under but I have not yet tried to negotiate prices. I also called LA county dealerships and most have given me MSRP and a few said they could not quote me over the phone. ( I will not be dealing with them). Here is some advice if they are giving you a higher price than 26,600 for a package #5 then keep looking. I am hoping that I can go at the end of the month to get mine. ( my hubby is studying for his masters and does not have time) But please let us know your outcome!!!

Oh BTW I found a way to calculate tax and license based on your sale price. There is a calculator in the california DMV website that will do this for you. This way you can find your OTD price before going in.

    Hi Adoraim,

When you call a dealer over the phone or solicit a quote via email, you are playing softball with them. Rarely will you get the best price they have to offer.

When you show up at the dealer and indicate that you are serious and willing to buy now, you are playing hardball. That is when you apply your skills of negotiation. Only then will you find out the best price the dealer is willing to sell their product. If they offer a deal that is greater than what you are willing to pay, don't be afraid to thank them for their time and walk out the door.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You never get the deal you deserve, you get the deal you negotiate...

    Good Luck,

    Keith

I actually was on the phone with 1 dealer in the office of another... "Well Mr. Hamer Toyota, Mr. North Hollywood just said he could beat your price by $200 and give me +$200 on my trade in... I think I'll take my old car for 1 last ride over to North Hollywood.".... "Oh, no Mr. icharry, we'll beat him by another $100 and match his offer on your old car!" DEAL!

thats a sure way to get them to stop jerking around and give you a best offer ASAP.... mine was 2000+ under msrp for a 07 on dec 10th in the L.A. area...

    Good luck

Here in the Bay Area the newspaper ads are showing $2k off MSRP, and I bet you could beat that by another $1k (on a fully loaded model) by dealing with the fleet manager of a dealership with a large Prius inventory. Given the costs of carrying 75+ Priuses in inventory, they'll definitely be willing to make a good deal. I think a lot of dealerships badly underestimated how much demand would drop off and are now stuck with large inventories.

Look at fitzmall.com and search out Priuses. One of the lowest no haggle prices anywhere.

ucsbgaucho, I am also looking to buy a Prius in San Diego. Which dealership did you buy from?
