Ok I know theres the rising costs of repairs and products, but com'mon..

I took the Prius in for the 50k service.. $550.99  They flushed the injectors, changed the oil, air filter, changed the transmission fluid, and made ajustments on the computer.

I also took the tundra in for service.. $289.00  Oil change, replace the 3 front engine belts & fix a recall. They tried to get me to do the 30k service on the tundra that would've been another $400.00 bucks.
had I done that..

Thats got to be some labor costs!!!! I do not know I checked with mobile express lube the cost of the belts & oil change would have only been $100.00

I guess the prices are always exaggerated at the dealer.. :(

And you used a dealership because.....? Dealerships always cost more. Service is where they make their money.

so the more toyotas they know you have, the harder bargain you should be able to drive. there's a guy here with a whole bunch of em and man do they tell the techs to take good care of him!

you didn't need the injector flush or the trans fluid change at 50k... and Wth kind of computer adjustments did they make? the recall fix? that should've been free.

the recall on the tundra again should have been free, and oil changes here cost $38, so you just paid $250 for 3 belts... and the only engine that had 3 belts was the 3.4L v6 which he's not even sure was in the tundras that year. if there were 3 belts, then $180-200 is more like it.

sorry you got screwed, man. :(

As I have said before, I have owned a vehicle from each of the big three manufacturers.. I have found toyota to be the most reliable/dependable vehicles I have ever owned, I will continue to own toyotas..
The Prius I plan to trade in for another prius or the HyCam. The tundra I plan on keeping as its an 04 w/27k on it. It still smells new. ;)

I will find the reciept and post exactly what work was done.

Don't *ever* tell a dealer, "I want yer 50,000 mile service". Every dealer makes up their own standard menu of services larded up with every conceivable thing that any car might need. If you ask for that they charge you for everything, even the items that are impossible on your car.

When scheduling service read to them the list of required items from the maintenance schedule that came with the car. No more, no less.

Were you having performance issues? Eg: sag, stumble, etc? My 1990 4Runner ran fine with 398,000 km on it, and I never had an injector "flush." I did change the fuel filter every two years.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusguy04 @ Feb 17 2007, 07:18 PM) </div>
I'm a believer in that service. You can do it yourself in about 15-20 minutes, fluid will cost you about $38 Cdn. I think the most benefit is from an early initial service - same time as the oil change - then every 50 K or so.

Like a TSB or a flash? Those should be free

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusguy04 @ Feb 17 2007, 07:18 PM) </div>
I can see new drive belts every 5-6 years. Again, "recalls" are free.

Looks like I should quit my job and open a Toyota dealership where you live.

Maybe they don't like cops, who knows? I'll look up the Maintenance Menu online for Toyota Canada and see what your Prius and truck would have cost to service in Winnipeg

$850 would buy you one hell of a nice set of Craftsman tools at Sears. ;)

Well, I looked up the Toyota Maintenance Menu for your vehicles if you had them here in Winnipeg. I grouped close to the equivalent km’s

2004 Prius:

64,000 km:

Oil and filter change: $34.95
Inspect fuel system
Inspect valve clearance (Audible)
Replace inverter coolant: $64.95
Replace engine coolant: $99.95
Replace cabin air filter: $50.95
Total: $309.80 plus taxes

72,000 km:

Oil and filter: $34.95

80,000 km

Oil and filter: $34.95
Inspect HV battery state of charge
Replace cabin air filter: $50.95
Total: $144.90

2004 Tundra:

40,000 km:

Oil and filter: $34.95

48,000 km:

Oil and filter: $34.95
Replace air filter: $24.95
Replace standard spark plugs: $94.95
Inspect and lube drive shaft: $15.95
Total: 229.80

56,000 km:

Oil and filter: 34.95

They do offer a brake fluid flush and fill for $62.95, $95 for the Prius due to having to use diagnostic tester to cycle the solenoid valves and electric booster pump. They suggest a brake flush every 4 years.

A throttle body cleaning is $49.95 “if indicated.†A fuel injection flush is $90 “if indicated.†Drive belts price varies “if indicated.â€

<_< Why I like my Dealer's Service Department (incidentally NOT where I bought my Prius):

1. They don't try to sell me their "Recommended ??-mile Service";
2. They follow my "by the numbers" request to the letter, including tire pressures and use of motor oil I provide.
3. My Prius is returned freshly washed;
4. The Service Invoice is detailed and proof positive that I have maintained my Prius.

All Dealers are not compulsive thieves, but sometimes it takes some searching to find the good ones. You are not under any obligation to have your Prius serviced where you bought it. Toyota Service Departments are properly paid for warranty service by Toyota and I've found the good ones are happy to have your business.

I must admit to liking our dealership and their service department, a surprise actually since I have never before used dealer service to any extent. We go to the Traverse City (Michigan) dealer, which has a 'quick lube' station much like jiffy except they know what they are doing (generally - they did tell me that a headlight adjustment was not a simple matter of, um, adjusting which is apparently not true...). And they seem otherwise responsive to my needs and suggestions (so far...I haven't had very much experience in 17k miles).

Things do change, though. The same dealership, some years ago, serviced a friend's vehicle (one of the truck models) on a recall, and it needed a transmission flush and re-lube. After a few months of driving he had tranny trouble and the lubricant would hardly come out; obviously it had not been replaced. I don't know if the dealership changed hands (and practices) or if a new service manager came in with improved service (like, don't lie to the customer).

The owners manual states what should be done, yet dealers love to add crap like flushing the injectors, etc. I ride bikes, and the MOM (Motorcycle Owners Manual) is the law. All work follows it to a T unless their is problem. Dealers should follow the owners manual as well, but don't because it is a business, and (of course) they can get away with it.

I learned my lesson after acting in good faith and going to the dealer for the 5k service. The dealer charged $10 per Liter for oil (and they overfilled the oil)! I do my own service - quick, clean and much cheaper, even using synthetic oil.

Prius has the same ICE as the Toyota Echo. Makes buying and keeping oil filters on hand much easier. Makes oil changes routine and easy.
