Here is a quick run through of what went on over the past few weeks:

Dealer No. 1 - "Sure, we should have it in by Friday." Took my credit, signed a few things. Friday came - NO Response from dealer. Long story short - A trade couldn't be negotiated. After complaining about the fact the credit issue to consumer affairs we received a call back shortly after stating that the vehicle had been sold.

Dealer No. 2 - About 12 hours north of us but we called them because this is the dealership that Dealer No. 1 stated had it in stock. When I spoke with the salesman he said that they didn't have it but that another dealer did. "We don't have it here but it will be NO problem getting it from the dealer it is at since we trade with them frequently." Before negotiating the trade they asked for a deposit which we made sure was refundable. Another few days went by they finally said they would have it the next day....Then that day went by and the pattern progressed. IN THE MEAN TIME - We were talking with another dealership who mentioned another dealership trying to trade for that car that was on THEIR lot. We happened to ask which dealership it was. He gave us the name of the Dealer No 2. The following day after negotiating the deal with the FINAL dealership for the car, dealer 2 was trying to get, they called and said "we have it." I asked for a picture along with the VIN number. When I asked for it, the salesman's tone change completely and he stated. "What good would that do? You are speaking with (name), you don't need a picture." I insisted that if it was indeed on the lot I wanted to see a picture of it. What I got about an hour later was a picture taken with a phone camera of a Prius. It had no sale stickers on it was outside of the workshop. Hmmmm....After his tone I couldn't believe that and when I asked for the deposit back I was hung up on the first time. I called the financial manager who then said the salesman had to approve it. So I had him put the man on the line.

Dealer 3 - Another dealer I spoke to through the email. What a surprise. EXACTLY what I was looking for told me that it hadn't arrived yet but was on it's way. His "plan" was to trade it before it "hit dock." The prices he was promising me were marvelous. But, when I asked him how he could guarantee that another dealership wouldn't do the same thing he was doing, he just re-stated his plan. <_<

Dealer 4 - Had the car in stock. Quoted me a ridiculous price. When I stated it was higher than the other places, he hung up on me. Surprisingly, he called me back today asking about my interest in the Prius. I told him I'm having one delivered tomorrow. He then asked if it was from his dealership. I said - No. When you called back with the quote and I told you I had better offers you hung up on me. He was speechless for a moment and said there must have been a misunderstanding. UH..Huh......

FINAL DEALERSHIP: This one had the car in stock. I told him how much I was quoted at the other dealerships and what my financing was approved at. When we asked for pictures of the vehicle his response was - "Certainly. I will have those to you in 10 minutes." Within 10 minutes I had a full-size picture of the vehicle on the lot with the name of the dealership and a sign stating the current date. He sent pictures of the interior and one of the lot with the car on it and another picture of the VIN number sticker on the car.

I told him that we were approved for financing and did not want our credit run again. He right away looked into it and found a quick solution that we could agree on. After looking at the prices of hotels and the expense to take the drive up to the location we found it would cost an easy $400 (low side) for accommodation, transportation, etc. So, we asked how much it would be to bring it down - $300. I feel that's fair enough. Saves us the time, money, and having to find a sitter for our 2 year old. He called us just today and said that it will be leaving their facilities tomorrow morning at 9:30 am and that we should have it by about 3pm.

So, I will be a proud owner of a Prius. Sometime tomorrow!!! I can't wait!!!!!!

CONGRATS!!! You definately felt my pain there, thankfully one of us are out. I dont doubt any of what happened to you. I'm about halfway through my story, probably, unless it's as simple as waiting till the end of the month for the next delivery.

I absolutely hate buying a car because of the problems you just described. And, being a woman, they always think they can talk about "color" and that is all I will care about. They also always want to know where my husband is. The truth is I have negotiated every car deal for the last 25 years because my husband hates the process as well, but the assumption by the salesman is that I can't make a decision without his presence. I just sent a request for an internet quote last night on a Prius that is very similar to want we want to purchase. We shall see what I get this A.M. I would really like to avoid going through what you had to go through.

    Oh. My. God.

Although my car was a week late, my dealer was really nice (the delay was apparently caused by a storm system that came thru port - Jacksonville). They got the color, interior, and package we wanted. They originally were going to arrange a trade, but the exact car was coming into port, and they claimed it for me. It had 2 miles on it when it arrived; 3 after the dealer took it to the service station for gas. Other dealers that I checked pricing with were courteous, too. It's just unbelievable that so many people gave you such crap when you were trying to give them money!!!

I hope your new Pri arrives safe and sound, and is perfect. You deserve that after the mess you've been through.

I could hardly sleep last night!!! I don't think I've been so excited over a car since high school when I got a mustang!!! My Dad then had agreed to match me dollar for dollar when I was 13 to get it and I lost months of sleep when I saw I was coming close! :p

I have the same issues being a girl too. It also doesn't help that at 27 my voice still sounds like I'm 13! The only time that comes in handy is when telemarketers call and ask for mom. Sigh...She's never home. :p What I've stated lately is this is what we want, this is the offer. I do most of the deal over email and for this one only called to confirm the terms. If they ask about my husband I say he is having me settle the deal since he's in and out of meetings all day. Which is actually the truth. In reality, I prefer for him to do the dealing. But he refuses to waste his time with anyone unless we've already come to an agreement.

I was very tempted to wait for that one dealer that had that other one coming in since the deal was slightly better but, the whole issue with not having it in-hand and the empty promises really irks me.

    Anyhow, today is the day!!!

try carsdirect.com, 6 or 7 clicks of putting in only zipcode and car you want and you get a quote. For my area it was $100 above invoice for my package ($24,831), so maybe for you it can be good too. It's not for all cars, but for the prius in the southeast it helps.

And don't just think carsdirect is good for only that, even if you don't use them it's WONDERFUL negotiating power. When you go to the dealership show them the price you saw there by using their computer and ask them if they can beat that. They will have seen that all you did was put in 6 or 7 clicks and zipcode to get that price, so they will sweat. Good luck!! :D

This is why before I said I had no doubt in his story. He's just done with his while i'm midway through my story, haha. He obviously is telling the truth if he's feeling the same pains as I am. This is scary stuff, but I mean this is why priuschat community exists, to help peole's experiances be better than our past experiences. That is my goal when I have my car, to help others as I helpped myself when I was looking for my car on here.

My thoughts exactly. You hit the nail on the head. I could have paid $113 less and gotten free mats if I would have taken the empty promise from my first dealer, but they had to trade for the car from my new dealer, and why should I do that if I can just go directly to my new dealer for the car? Win when you find the source.

After you have the car please take it to the other dealers and park by the showroom. When accosted by one of the sales people show them the car they didn't want to get for you. Priceless.

Haven't been on for a while actually....SINCE I GOT MY PRIUS!!!! :D Was delivered on Saturday at around 2pm. Been too busy obsessing over it ever since. 1am and what do I want to do? Go into the garage and program some more numbers into the phone book, program my home link, or just go for a drive. But....The alarm is on in my home and I'd wake everyone up here if I went and did that. Guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow.....

JimN - Love that idea! LOL! To the dealer that flat out told me that the dealer I purchased from did not have it....Well, he IS about 7 hours away so it was just a lot less time consuming (now that gas is not an issue) to send him a picture letting him know that the non-existent car ended up in my possession. :p Not surprised that he didn't bother replying.

Can I have your remaining Magnetic grey prius luck? :D Hehe. I hope mine comes along too.

Man I envy that you can enjoy the bluetooth. I own a Sidekick 3, which is a GREAT and EXPENSIVE phone (technically, it's a PDA made by sharp) but the 'bluetooth' on it is just headsets only, so i'd have to buy a razor to really enjoy the bluetooth features on my phone, heh.

Man nice new picture as your avatar, too. I bet you'll be talking like MAD on here now, haha.

Congratulations. IMO it is time to start protecting the finish. Get either the black rubber or clear thin plastic rear bumper applique. This goes along the top of the rear bumper to minimize damage from cargo handling. Get some plastic on the front of the car and ask about the sides. People here like 3M and ventureshield plastic films. Pump up the tires for better mpg. May this be the end of your Prius problems!

    ...And welcome to the club.

Back from driving!!!! OMG! I can't remember the last time I drove just for he hell of it!!! :)

Anyhow, I'll have to look into that bumper applique I've heard about it, but honestly...I don't know much about it just yet. :( I stand in aw when I read about the various mods and different things people do with their cars. VERY impressed and hope to eventually get there someday. A bumper applique sounds like something I might just be able to handle. Now, a custom installation of a DICE IPOD integration unit.......I think that's probably something I'm going to end up drooling over for a while more now. I bought a generic mini-plug the other day. The audio is far from great but it sure beats the joke of a FM transmitter I was using in my old car! About to hit the sack, but you can bet I'll be looking into that applique tomorrow.

For now need to catch up on some sleep. It was a pain trying to find a mag gray that was in my price rage with just the right amount of goodies. As for bluetooth, I have an MM-A900 (Samsung) serviced by Sprint and it's done pretty good so far. Can't complain. One thing I haven't been able to program is the garage door. I just can't seem to get it right! Oh well -plenty to keep me busy!!! I STILL HAVE TO SELL MY OLD CAR TOO!!! *LORI FAINTS*

Funny you say that because with my wife everything matters and she is extremely tough on car salesmen. I am never going to ever buy a car without taking her along because she is tough to please and will hardball to get the deal right or we will leave.

That is awesome, and I highly recommend it. Because this is exactly what I did to the dealer who lost their sale with me, I of course needed an oil filter and I decided hey they are still conveniently located on my way home from work, I'll just stop in there on the way home. And like the jackass that I am, I washed it up the night before, and parked near the front where the showroom is rather in the back by the parts and service departments. It was a good feeling. :D

I am having difficulty getting the Prius that I want too. I put down a down payment on one that my salesman said would be here next week...now his tune has changed. Next week we will know if the one I want is available...so I may get it, I may not.

This is the 3rd dealership I've dealt with. Seems like they don't want to help you get the color options that you want.

Sad in FL...just want my new car!

I know what you mean. I'm in the same boat. It's tough. A deposit doesn't promise anything, it just means that they will try to trade for the car you want from the dealership. And if they can't get it they will wait till the LAST possible moment to help you.

Please try carsdirect.com, their price for a higher package prius is great and they will do alot to find it for you. You should talk to a guy named Dameon if you're in Florida (very strong guess), if you do, mention that Anthony refered you, and that you found me on prius chat and I recommended you. That should help him become nicer to you and not BS you.

If not, then you can use the carsdirect price as a good quote on site at the dealership. You show them the price and say 'do you want my buisness? this this is the price I want. As you can tell they offer me this, so if YOU want my money, you can offer me the same'. And then they likely will, and even throw in some mats or something for free. :D

    Good luck!

They may match it and they might not, personally I wouldnt count on them matching and beating the price, I took my negotiated deal across town and the sales manager said it wasnt possible, then tried to get me in a Corolla. The good news is that it convinced me and my wife that we had a good deal.

Yup. Your prediction was correct. It's nice that you can always say 'but throw in the mats for free!' in the end and you have yourself a sale.
