I am looking at a Salvage auction Prius. The frame looks good, The bumper, hood and one headlight need to be replaced. I can’t see the interior very well but it looks like all airbags have blown. The dash reads “check hybrid system, stop vehicle in a safe place” i have replaced a prius bumper/headlights before. I can prob replace the hood as well. After that. What am i looking at to get this back on the road? Does An accident instantly throw up the code an accident instantly throw up the code “Check hybrid system”? Also I’ve never replaced airbags in the headliner before… What is that like? Thank you so much for your responses
Any pictures? I've heard blown air-bags more-or-less total a car, due to labour/cost/complexity. Buy for a few hundred tops and part it out?
Forgot to tell you that the vehicle Will be almost free to me… So consider the purchase price almost free
There’s quite a few YouTube videos on airbags… Doesn’t look that hard looks like about $600 and the airbags from eBay eBay
Looks can be deceiving, but structurally the damage "looks" trivial. Air bags could be THE major repair, which is frustrating..
To answer the question, no the hybrid alert does not come on simply because it had a collision. The car has some hybrid problem. Guessing without codes (our specialty at Priuschat), it may be an overheat based on where it was hit. If it was left on for any length of time without engine cooling, the engine may be shot. A lot of this could be verified with a code reader and visual inspection. If no real hybrid problem exists I would expect the engine to Ready and start.
Besides a dealer. How can i get codes? Is there a blutooth interface? I ask this because I have a Mr. Prius for checking battery strength
I'm realizing I've never seen a priuschat thread on airbag replacement. Have you? Would be interesting to see what it involves. I've read on here about clearing the error code for air bags deployed and how that can be a hassle, but yet to read details of where you're gonna get a good price and safely install these types of explosive devices.
Here's an excerpt from Repair Manual, hopefully all the airbag info. Just skimming, I'm scared straight, wouldn't know where to begin.
