D-Rings added to Prime cargo area...

I had my stereo/alarm installer (Streetnoyz in San Diego, CA) add "D" rings to my cargo area. Something like these really should have been included with the Prime.

The front rings (the ones closest to the rear seat) were simple to install. There is a recessed area on each side of the cargo area directly behind the rear seat. There's a plastic piece there that looks like it just pushes into place to hold the trim piece in place, but there's actually a threaded hole there. My installer had some "D" rings that he was able to bolt into place that fit neatly into the recessed area (see the photos below).

The back rings (the ones nearest the bumper) were the difficult ones. They had to remove the bumper and attach the back rings to the body of the car. They used some sort of spacers so that they could be tightened without compressing the interior trim piece/panel they are mounted against. They are very secure.

This job was almost all labor. I had some other things done, but I think this was about 3 hours of labor, so around $300.

I ordered the cargo net on Amazon. It is 24" by 45", but is far too wide. It was $8.49. I'll probably continue to try to find a better-fitting net. My '03 Insight had one that might be around the right size, so I might buy one of those on eBay.

The yellow cable ties on the cargo net are there to help me mark off how I was going to re-direct the bungee cord that is threaded through the edges of the net (I ran it further in so that the net wouldn't be so loose).

 

That looks great. It is something entirely different in terms of what it will accomplish by way of securing things, but I'd love to do what you've done, too.

I'd like to have a stand-up envelope net like that, too. Could you tell me what those metal pieces are that you've used, and where to get them? And where to get that cargo net, too? Is the net attached at the bottom, or at the top only?

Hi VVTiBob: About half of what? Is that the one in RandomWalk101's photo? Is it the right width? It looks like it might be too tall. Do you know anything about the attachments he used (that are shown in his photos in his post here)?

 

That sounds like it worked well for your Prius, but the Prime is much more shallow in the cargo area. I don't know if it would work well in the Prime.

 

The bends in this photo look very precise. The round part looks perfect. How could you bend flat metal so perfectly? Also, did you have to shave down the plastic piece for it to fit through?

 

Could you post some close-up photos of the installed hooks? How did you attach them? Thanks!

 

Thanks for those extra photos. I don't see the black plastic "T"-shaped piece I've pointed a yellow arrow to in my Prime Advanced. It looks like it's in the recess that the retractable Tonneau cover fits into. Is that piece simply not present in the Advanced?

 

As shown in my first photo in my original post, the first cargo net I tried with my "D" hooks didn't fit very well. I thought I'd probably be going through a series of them, but I lucked out and the second one I ordered (shown in the photos below) fits almost perfectly. It's also double-layered and has binding around all edges, so it's much sturdier.

The last photo shows two adjustable flat bungee cords. Using the net and/or the bungee cords, I should be able to secure most things I'd carry.
