I am bringing in my Prius tomorrow AM so that they can drain some oil out of the car.

Originally they thought they were going to fix a non-operating smart key system but I found out it was simply disabled (Thanks to the wealth of knowledge I had acquired here).

I have the customizable electronic features pdf from one of Evan's old posts. I was hoping to have them brighten the steering wheel control lights, but after carefully re-reading This Thread I believe it is not possible. If it IS possible, please post details! (Nate??)

The only change I was going to have them make is for: Compressor Mode -> Manual. I don't like it when I hit auto for the tempurature that it turns on the compressor. I like to control the compressor myself.

    Am I missing anything?

What scan tool features did you have the dealer change from it's default?

Word of caution: I had dealer set my alarm to passive mode. He was supposed to advise me of the cost, as he wouldn't do it for free, but the tech didn't realize this and did it anyway. Supposedly took 2 hours. I don't know if I believe this, or if the tech mistakenly did a complete reprogram, as the workorder had in it to do a program update, but service mgr determined it wasn't needed for my car.

Then I found out I could change the passive mode myself by doing a dance. The passive mode stunk, since it did not lock the doors, so I disable it again myself.

A tool is needed for many of the options, but some can be done by a dance. As far as I know, I am the only one in US or Canada who has had a dealer change an option that has to be done by the THHT.

    Thank you for replying.

The dealer said the scan tool cannot set the option for A/C compressor to manual. He did mention that some of the settings (such as whether just the driver's side door or all doors are unlocked by the keyless entry system) are done by the "Dance" and not by the scan tool. He didn't specifically mention if the A/C compressor on Auto/Manual was done by a "Dance" but I now suspect it is. He was trying to tell me it was not a customizable option which bothered me because I have the printout with me saying it is a customizable option.

Q: Where does one find out this type of information? I can live with it as is, but I am intrigued and bothered by the fact that it seems to be a customizable options with no information available on just how to customize it.

Have the tech look at page 05-1266 of the repair manual.

Unfortunately, the manual doesn't say how to change it, just that it is customizable, and to check how it is set. Should be a menu option on their tool to change it.

What exactly is "Dance" in the context of what is being discussed here?

DM32: Thanks again for the repair manual reference. Unfortunately the dealer is not close enough for me to "drop in" and push this issue. Unless I had a definite solution, I do not have a peer to peer relationship with them where we could look at the scan tool togehter and explore options. I will wait for something to surface and just live with it this way for now.

IAP: The Dance is the series of events that allow someone to change settings on the car without any special hardware. For instance the "dance" to disable the reverse beep.

How do you happen to know what the procedures are for these customizations? More importantly, where are they documented.

And if you respond with "they are not documented" yet not provide documentation, then, well, shame on you! :)

    Victor:

I believe the US version of the document you attached is the same I had downloaded from one of EFUSCO's prior posts. I will attach here for reference.

    Tony:

I don't know if you were speaking to me or Dan. The document above is also referenced on the pre-delivery checklist. I am assuming you knew what I was referencing. I will let Dan speak for himself. He obviously has the Prius repair manual. I am not sure about source for the procedure (aka Dance) to enable / disable passive mode, though.

The one Victor posted is the same one I referenced, from the repair manual.

I did post the dance for passive mode here or on PriusOnline.
Now that I figured a way to extract from the PDF (Trial version of Acrobat expired), and post here, I can do that more often. I have to use Paint to save graphic copied from PDF to file through clipboard. Then attach the file.

    Thank you Dan!

I think I'm with you -- passive mode doesn't seem particularly hep'ful. But appreciate you posting the information.

The thing I really don't understand is why!!! Why all of these "dances" for setting things, including easy stuff like resetting the oil reminder. This should all be accessible on the touch screen. This is insanity :cussing: :guns: :cussing: :pukeleft: :pukeright: :guns: :cussing: I can not imagine what the Toyota engineers were thinking when they did this. This is in most respects the Prius is a very elegantly designed car except for these interface issues. It is like somebody pithed them when they got to that part of the design. I feel some what better now. I would like them to fix it or someone to design a hack. As you can see it bothers me to see something well designed and executed with such an obvious flaw.

Well, car companies in general don't want customers modifying/touching anything if possible.

Think of the extra steps you need to go through as a "dummy protector". People who want to make the changes will figure out how. People who shouldn't be messing with the settings, won't get themselves in trouble.

Personally, I'd love a system where the Prius could display a detailed fault-report message on the screen when there's a problem with some part of the car. Show a 3D display of the car, zoom in on the problem area, describe the problem, and describe the possible solutions.

But it's not going to happen because Toyota wants you to bring the car back to the dealership for service, not fix it yourself, or get a non-Toyota dealership to do it for you.

    Dave.

Yes, but some of the "dances" are pretty stupid. Like changing the door unlock behavior or cancelling the back up beeper or passanger belt warning. Anything we can do with our fobs or buttons in the car should be via a screen on the MFD.
