Tesla Model S Catches Fire In Toronto Garage – EV Was Not Plugged In

Sitting in their garage - the Model S wasn't even plugged in. Wow. Time for their stock to go roller coaster ... again ... maybe I'll buy in the dip.
    ;)
Tesla will pay for all the damage. Can you IMAGINE the cost ... if the traditional auto industry / refuel industry offered to pay for all the gasoline/ICE fires? It's just a guess, but I'm thinking that'd be the end of both of 'em in short order.

It would definitely be a good buying opportunity IF there is a dip.
From the pictures it looks like the car was the least damaged thing in the garage.
The charger, wall outlet, and cable were all cleared as not being the source of the fire so I don't know if this will have much of an impact.

The stock is at 199, just bellow the all time high it set yesterday. I would not call that a dip. Earnings come out next week, and the stock is very frothy. I can't immagine all the good news is not already out. The stock is way up this year.

    What caused the fire?

My guess is something to do with the 12V battery and harness.

Is that up in front? That appears to be the fire was centered.

There's a recent story in the SF Bay Area about a Tesla owner blaming the new car smell for the death of a person on a bicycle he crashed into. He said the new car smell was strong so he put down Arm and Hammer air freshener to hide the smell. But it still made him fall asleep at the wheel. (palm to forehead!)

If it isn't a fire, it's the smell. Tesla? - or- Lethal?

"New car smell" or ozone, as has been suggested from time to time in the case of the Prius?

I don't have a smoke detector in my garage...probably should have one.

interestingly, they are not required here, and they seem to update the codes every couple years.

Concern of false alerts, perhaps. Not only is it possible that exhaust from the car could set off a smoke detector, but people could also be starting up smokier power equipment in of near the garage.

Not a "bad" idea, but as garage space is not generally permitted to be occupied by code, the only way an alarm would be useful is if it triggered a remote anunciator.

Smoke detectors in garages were recommended around here a couple decades ago when a serial arsonist was on the loose, targeting carports and garages. Though never required, I put one in and have maintained it since.

That is code in some places.
