Bear with me, it's simple logic really!
    • 10 gallon tank, 50 mpg = 500 miles range total.
    • 10 gallon tank, 60 mpg = 600 miles range total.
    • 4.4 kWh battery for 11 miles EV at 95 mpge
    • 8.8 kWh battery at 120 mpge should be... 26% more than double which is 22, so it should be...27.789 miles EV! What am I missing here?
    Damn greenwashing figures ;P

Just do the calc's backwards. Says it does 600 miles. Subtract the 22 miles. Remaining 578 is from a known gas tank size. The result is the mpg. That is, if we trust Toyota's 600 mile figure. I don't.

The devil is in the details. In the case of the first generation PiP, the car only achieved 95 MPGe because the standard EPA test caused the gasoline engine to turn on. That brief gas usage was factored into the MPGe rating. A careful application of the throttle will avoid gas usage and go 11 or so miles in EV. It would likely have a better MPGe rating if the test avoided turning on the gas engine.

Although the Prime has a more efficient design, my guess is the additional power will also encourage people to drive it more inefficiently. The fact that the old Prius EV mode was limited to 62 MPH and the Prime is rated to over 80 makes a huge difference in energy consumption.

If the Prime is driven as if it were the PiP, I bet people will achieve over 30 miles in EV mode.

The tank size is 11.3 US gallons (43 litres)

    Using 11.3 gal, that's 51 mpg.

Yup. 51. That's exactly what I would have got if I spent 10 seconds longer to reach for the calculator and did the division. But how one uses the car will determine if they get 51 mpg, 41 mpg or 61 mpg. Same applies to the EV miles to a lesser extent. Not really worth trying to calculate all this out now because whatever we think it will do, it will be a far different story when each of us is driving our own Prime in our own territory and in our own way. Just mental arithmetic at this point.

For me, since a round trip to work and back is 2.2 miles, and if I charge the thing up often enough, and I never drive it beyond 10 miles from home in the lifetime of the car, my mpg will be (close to) infinity. Just say'in.

i wonder if they'll recommend not leaving it charged again.

Hope so. I'm sure the apps would work better if it was plugged in, but in my case, I have no garage. When plugged, the cord would come from just below the porch next to the driveway, and out into the elements to the car. I can't see me wanting any car attached any hours I'm not watching it for the hoodlums to play with all night.

^? Not understanding your point. Are you saying it is really 25 miles EV? If so, the car hasn't even seen production yet.

I think this may be the case where Toyota is just being very careful not to overestimate when the EPA test comes in. They are saying 22 miles EV when EPA might actually agree and say 25. But I think the tests have changed also....

toyota's estimate, which is what the epa uses. the epa doesn't really test many vehicles, unless there's a question.

Then it is up to us to do this! I wonder if anyone getting this car might post their mileage? :D

We'll know by Fall what the final numbers are. Toyota will (probably) release another statement with the final numbers, packaging and pricing.

I'd agree with Tideland. All things being equal a doubling of battery capacity doesn't really mean we'll have a simple doubling of EV miles. Right now it's an approximation. I'd gather that it will be more than the 22 miles because many other things have been improved. The power electronics will have improved as well as the motors and inverters. Toyota themselves said this when they discussed multiple times how they improved the electronics in the Gen 4 Prius by making them smaller, lighter and more powerful (Green Car Congress: Toyota details powertrain advances in Gen4 Prius; available E-Four system for all-wheel drive (not for US)). The entire power train was improved by 20% fewer mechanical losses according to the article. Utilizing both motors (MG1 and MG2) will make acceleration more efficient as well as improve the range. This is evidenced by Tesla adding approximately 10 more miles by adding a second motor.

Well doesn't matter too much to me.
I only use EPA estimates, and sticker MPG estimates as chimerical guideposts.
I don't want manufacturers in any fraudulent representation gap, but neither do I expect them to be dead on estimates.

In today's world, with owners groups and websites, it's far more accurate and relatively easy, in short time, to gain real world MPG performance from sites like Prius Chat and others.

Speculation is fine. But in short time we will gain real world active feedback.
    I can wait.

so maybe they could have doubled range and kept the hatch floor flat.

Who's going to be the first to double up the 8.8 kWh battery and have 17.6kWh? Seems to me a few people did that with the Gen-II to increase mileage.

no one's done it with pip 1 though, it's really tricky, and expensive.
